James goes to the nurse and said
"I was going to rent a TV for my wife so she could watch Redd Foxx but after hearing about this bills I change my mind" Wouldn't have been funnier if he said so my wife can watch "Sanford and Son" |

For blacks at that time it wasn't uncommon to say that we were going home to watch Redd Foxx since he was such a large personality. We might have said that or that we were going to watch Fred Sanford rather than the actual name of the show. We used to say that we wanted to see Archie, rather than name All in the Family or that we wanted to see JJ rather than Good Times or Fonzie rather than Happy Days.
I don't know the day and time when that episode aired, but I believe Good Times aired directly against Sanford at one time (in 1974?) so that would be another reason why they wouldn't say the show by name. Viewers might be tempted to tune out Good Times to see why Florida wanted to watch Redd Foxx for real. |

Yeah both Good Times and Sanford and Son aired at 8pm on Friday Nght during the spring of 1974. The closest the GT characters came to saying the name Sanford and Son was in the episode-TV Commercial" Thelma was trying to convince Florida that doing a commercial is acting. Thelma said_"Everyone knows what you see on TV is not real. Just like Redd Foox, he doesn't really own a junkyard, he is just playing the part of a man who owns a junkyard". |
