Default Petrie "Pop-ups"

Recent posts to the "trivia" thread have inspired me to start this one. Let's list the many unusaual places we may have seen the Petries pop up, or even just receive mention. Movies, other sitcoms, game shows, ect. It can be the show, it's characters or just the actors and creators from TDVDS. I'll go first:
Last night on a local PBS show featuring interesting people and places around our city, they featured a comic book artist and his work. He mentioned that in crowd scenes, he sometimes draws in famous people just for fun. They showed one such scene, and when they did a close-up, there were Rob & Laura Petrie!

Great idea! I've heard or seen the show mentioned on Friends, Whose Line is it Anyway? and in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire. That's all I can think of for now.

They showed a clip on King of Queens.
Wasn't there an actress on Mad TV
or somewhere who did an impression
of Laura Petrie?

On "The Nanny" (one of my fave shows!), they once had a tag scene that was a parody of TDVDS. Fran Drescher played Laura pretty well. She told "Rob" she had some something terrible, and when he asked what, she sobbed, "I pushed our beds together!" hehe. They also had a couple more refrences through the years, resulting from the fact that Ann Guilbert played Yetta on the show.

Yes,
But not a very flattering portrayal. Mo Collins purposely over-acted the role, as did everyone else. In the end, Alex Borstein, who played Sally, revealed her pent-up lesbian tendencies as she leered lustfully at Laura, to which Laura let out with an "Oh Rob!"
I do watch the show occassionally, and the skit was funny at times, IMO, but not anything we'd wanna see on a dvd!

Here's another.
Although not exactly the Petries, it's MTM related.
There's a sophisticated, upwardly mobile, African-American sitcom on UPN named Girlfriends. On their season finale, Maya, a divorced Mom, finale finds a publisher for the novel she wrote. As she was walking out of the meeting and got outside, the theme to TMTMS, "Your Gonna Make It After All," started, and Maya smiled, did a spin, and threw her hat into the air!

A particularly cruel "Dick Van Dyke" "pop up" occurred a few years ago on the sitcom "Friends"....

If I remember correctly, Joey had come into some money and went on a wild spending spree, and one of his purchases was a big-screen TV.

Joey, Chandler and Ross were in the living room watching "The Dick Van Dyke Show" on the big-screen TV. The Van Dyke scene was an "office" scene with Rob, Buddy and Sally working on an Alan Brady script. The scene on the TV was a medium-shot of the three of them sitting in the office....then suddenly the scene cut to a close-up of Sally talking. When that close-up of Sally appeared on the big-screen TV, Joey, Chandler and Ross all recoiled in horror and let out a big yell, as if they were watching a 3-D horror film and a close-up of the monster was suddenly flashed on the screen....and then one of the guys (I think it was Chandler) said something like, "There are SOME things that just SHOULDN'T be seen on a big-screen TV!"....

Since Rose Marie is very much alive, and COULD have been watching that episode of "Friends", I thought that that was a very cruel gag at Rose's expense.

That's awful!!! I can't believe they did that!!! And I thought Matthew Perry was a fan of the Van Dyke show.....he presented them the legend award at the first TV Land Awards!

Btw...pilotguy, do you know the name of this friends episode? I've seen most of the episodes in the series, but I don't remember this particular one.

Sorry but I don't know the specific episode name....Not to offend "Friends" fans, but I have NEVER watched an entire episode of the show! I've seen bits and pieces here and there....even whole 15 minute "acts", but never a complete beginning-to-end episode. It just never really "grabbed" me....

Can any loyal "Friends" fan help us out on the episode title of that "Rose Marie-bashing" episode?

Pilotguy, if you're crazy, then I am too!

Rose Marie was (and still is!) A LOT funnier than Jennifer Aniston. Sally makes me laugh so much more than Rachel does!! Its not fair how Rose never got the attention she deserved.

I remember that episode of Friends too. I'm not too fond of the comment about Rose Marie either. I think it must have been from the first season, but I'm not quite sure which episode. I just watched it recently. If I find it, I will be sure to let you all know.

DickVanDykeMan & PilotGuy,
I thought I was a fan of the show. You are true fans.

Steve
PS, I'd like to say I agree with you. I mean, the spirit is willing, but...

OK Steve, I'll agree with you up to a point....those photos of Jennifer ARE quite sexy and attractive....

...but there isn't ONE where she's wearing a black bow in her hair!
