Default After the 82-83 season, to save the show Norman Lear presented this idea to CBS so it

would be renewed for the 83-84 schedule. He was going to give the Archie character a very young wife to stir up some controversy. CBS didn't like the idea and the show was not brought back. Kind of confusing though because the show finished 24th in the ratings. Also the spinoff Gloria finished 18th and was also not renewed.

Yeah, I remember reading that in the Archie & Edith book. Also, CBS renewed Alice (40-something in the ratings) that year. It definitely would have stirred up controversy. Archie had mellowed by then, but having Archie take in a young wife would have still been very out of character. I think CBS made a huge mistake that year. Those ratings were great for a show that had run that long.

I would have loved to seen it. And Archie Bunker's place should never had been canceled.

ABP finished at 21 after the 82-83 season and Alice gets renewed? Very Confusing

I agree, that would be, especially when you consider you'd be cancelling a thirteen-year old veteran show. (but networks don't think that way...) In the book, it said that the CBS president was also the current president of Warner-Bros., which owned "Alice". So, I assume Alice's renewal was more of underhanded deal than anything else.

Not taking anthing away from ABP but Alice was moved that year to a bad timeslot. I didn't even watch it much that season and Alice was one of my favorite shows.

And I was surprised at that, Gloria was a good show.

I was only able to see one episode that TV LAND aired back in 2002. That episode was OK. I'm looking to get more eps

I disagree-Gloria was a horrible show. If there was anything worse than seeing Archie without the rest of the family, it was seeing Gloria on her own. The show had no cutting edge whatsoever. Plus there was a falling out with the producers and there were no crossovers with ABP.

I thought at the time and still do today that Sally Struthers simply should have joined (or rejoined if you consider AITF and ABP the same series) ABP. That way the Archie-Gloria relationship could have been more properly revisited and ABP might have lasted a few more years.

Well it couldn't have been that bad to finish at #18

Yes, but apparently CBS didn't care for it either-I could not imagine a series finishing at #18 today and then being cancelled unless the producers or actors did not want to continue.

It's different times now. Shows that are considered hits now would have been canceled in 1983.Gloria wasn't as good as All In The Family but it was a cute show and I liked it. I wouldn't have mind if she went back to ABP after Gloria was canceled, but unfortunately ABP got canceled too.

I agree, plus Gloria could have been used as a mother figure for Stephanie and Billie. The girls along with Joey would fit well with sort of a sibling rivalry.
