I was just wondering if anyone knew of any original commercialsd and promos that this show had, and if they knew if any existed. I would love to see some of these appear on the DVD sets as bonuses, but unfortunately, think that Gilligan's Island's DVD sponsor does not care as much about the extra features as say Image, that produces The Dick Van Dyke Show sets.

I believe by the time Gilligan hit the tube ( 1964), the practice of having the cast doing commercials for the sponsor was pretty much on the way out. The early 60s were the latest this was done.
In the case of Dick van Dyke, in my opinion the only reason the commericals are still available for viewing today was the nature of the product the cast was endorsing...cigarettes. Not surprising to see Lucy & Ricky or Danny Thomas hawk cigarettes since they smoked all the time on their shows. But there is something, well far out to see Fred & Wilma Flintstone or Mary Tyler Moore telling you that you should smoke Kent or Winston. Had Gilligan's Island been sponsored by a cigarette company( I assume they werent since it was in 1964 that the Surgon General first announced that cigarettes were bad for your health, it was also around this time that Winston dropped their sponsorship of the Beverly Hillbillies despite that show being so popular) and hadthey featured a scene of the castaways puffing Salems or whatever, that would be included with the DVD. Sure the cast wouldn't mind endorsing cigarettes since weren't most of the cast heavy smokers anyway? I have heard in the past that Russel Johnson, Alan Hale, and even Bob Denver were heavy duty smokers. |

From what I gathered, all of the cast members of "Gilligan's Island" and "Dick Van Dyke" smoked except Natalie Schaefer, Dawn Wells and Morey Amsterdam.
Thanks to Sheldon Leonard and Kent cigarettes, The DVD Show went on for four more hilarious seasons after it was originally dropped after the first. |
