I Can't Believe It

I can't believe what I have just read over at the Sitcoms Discussion Board today.Click here. I'm completely disgusted and shocked.

The posters over on the Sitcoms Discussion board (mostly fans of 80's sitcoms, mind you) have made a point of saying the Dr. Crane Frasier is the longest sitcom character in television. As fans of Lucille Ball, we all know that is just a bunch of bull because our dearly beloved Lucy played the "Lucy" character for nearly 22 years. 6 years in "I Love Lucy", 3 years years in "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour", 6 years for each "The Lucy Show" and "Here's Lucy" and 1 year for "Life With Lucy" which adds up to be 22 years. Dr. Frasier Crane was around for only 20 years. With that said, the "Lucy" character is clearly the longest sitcom character so far.

Another thing that bugs me is ... it has been said many times that Lucille Ball played the same character on each one of her shows, but yet she doesn't get the credit of having the title of "the longest sitcom character". It really pisses me off. Some people can just be hypocrites and down right close-minded.

I don't know what the world has been coming to these days.

Despite the fact that she played essentially the same character in 4 different sitcoms, they were different characters. Lucy Ricardo was not Lucy Carter who was not Lucy Carmichael. They may have similar characteristics, BUT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME CHARACTER. So their point about Dr. Crane is completely valid.

I'd like to hope that it is simply your strange extreme hatred for 80s shows that's making you not see that.

And don't you give me that crap about me not being a Lucy fan. You've beaten that dead horse long enough.

How can't they not be the same character when one was BASED on the other. In the Lucy Book, it states that Lucille Ball basically played the SAME CHARACTER despite the many name and format changes. It's as simple as that. The public always wanted to Lucille Ball in her "Lucy" character and that's why she continued with her later shows!!! Desi Arnaz even said that the public wanted to see ONLY her "Lucy" character.

I'm remotely NOT surpised that you're taking their side and the horrible thing is YOU'RE A MODERATOR. So nevertheless, you would stoop so low just to defend them. So I guess it's safe to say that you are just as bad as the rest of the guys over at the Sitcoms Discussion board. The only reason why I posted this thread here AND NOT THERE was because I didn't want a fight to break out and I wanted to express my opinion without getting bashed. Well, Dawsongirl, congratulations you have completely DEFEATED that purpose. I guess it's true to say that it isn't even safe to post on the I Love Lucy board. And the sad thing is ... I'm more of Lucy Fan than what you'll ever be! What a shame!

Look up where it says moderator. Is my name there?? And it's thanks to people like you that I decided enough was enough and quit. Not that TJ has some sort of fan-scale to be a moderator. Like you have to be over 80% of a fan to even qualify. The whole thought of that makes me laugh.

more or less. There are your key words in your argument. More or less, meaning similar, but not exactly. She played similar, but not the same, character. Her last name changed. Her kids changed, her jobs changed...etc. The only thing that changed about Frasier was where he lived and who he hung around with. He was still the same Frasier Crane, same name, same job...SAME CHARACTER. This argument of yours, and that "more or less" evidence from The Lucy Book are completely moot.

Do I need to dig up evidence about your hatred for newer sitcoms? It's all over the General Board. Not like I'm making it up. And I was not bashing you. I was defeating your "opinion," which looked more like you stated it as fact anyway. If you want me to bash you, I can. But that's pretty pointless. And trust me, I'm being much nicer than some of them would be. You're just going overboard with it.

No, it doesn't - but that wasn't the point. I just find it to be ironic that Dawsongirl claims to be a Lucyfan but at the same time she puts down the Lucy shows most of the time and never gives them any credit. On top of that, she's the MODERATOR of this LUCY board. I find that to be an insult to whomever is a Lucy fan. By being the moderator of this board, she's representing the show and the fans. So far, her representation hasn't been good, in fact, insulting to say the least.

Did you not read what I said already? Their last names were different, Lucy Ricardo was not a widow, they had different children, they had different jobs...enough to make them different characters. If they were all Lucy Ricardo, since she came first, Lucy Carmichael would be named Lucy Ricardo, Lucy Carter would be named Lucy Ricardo. All three would live in the countryside of Connecticut with their nightclub-owning Cuban husband, who is very much alive. No daughters here! Just a mini Ricky. Viv would be Ethel and she'd still me married to Fred and not have any kids. See where I'm going with this?

Dawsongirl, your pointing out that if Lucy would have the same characters and settings around her then she would be the longest sitcom character, well Frasier didn't have the same characters on his shows and the same setting. He had the same name oh woo hoo! But like in Romeo and Juliet she says "What is in a name?", I think its the personality of the character and Lucy had the "Lucy" persona for 22 years. She played the star struck, ditzy, yet insanely intelligent red head. Who cares if she played that with different people or with different last names, she is still the longest lasting sitcom character in my book?

Are you SERIOUS? Some of you Lucy fanatics really need to get a grip. In your quest to make sure Lucy is the leader in every sitcom category, you've lost touch with reality by trying to say she is the longest sitcom character in history. I've got to hand it to you guys though--you gave me a good laugh.

I believe Juliet was saying "what's in a name" because the only thing preventing her from having a public romance with Romeo is because his last name was the same as her family's enemy. To Juliet, he was a fine guy, so what did it matter if all that was keeping them apart was his last name? x1LucyFanx, don't try that comparison here.

And LucyFan, how dare you even create such an asinine topic. Cathy really couldn't explain it any better. She said it perfectly.

Dr. Frasier Crane wasn't surrounded by the same people in the second show because HE moved away. Lucy in all her shows was surrounded by different people becaues SHE was different people. All it says about her playing the same type of character was that she didn't stretch her comedic abilities very far...

Okay, I'm kidding there--she did what she did best--flaky red head, constantly getting in deep with her schemes. It was successful 3 times: With 3 different characters. (And then a 4th character with her short lived 80s show.) Similiar character traits doesn't mean the same character. Cathy proved why.

Guys, it's very simple, Lucy was playing different characters in different sitcoms! What's so hard to understand about that? And Cathy did a very good job explaining it. Was Mary Tyler Moore the same character in the Dick Van Dyke Show as she was in the Mary Tyler Moore Show? I have many examples.
