My newspaper wrote an article on the top ten sitcoms of all time and Cheers got number 6. I thought it was pretty cool. It beat out The Cosby Show (in your face nick at nite). I just thought I'd mention it!

On E!'s 100 best sitcoms of all time, Cheers was number FOUR!! But I guess you all know that. 6 is pretty good though.

http://www.eonline.com/On/Rank/Shows/TVComedies/
The list covers 25 TV comedies - not 100 like I had thought. Happy Days is only 15 muahaha. Frasier is 12. Friends is....8 (hmmm). Cosby Show is 3. And....of course...Seinfeld is 1 (*gulp*). I think we all know where Cheers REALLY belongs...but I guess 4 is good enough... Here's what it says about Cheers: 4. Cheers Why It Ranks: Unlike your Uncle Sal, who gets weepy when he drinks, the folks at Boston's Cheers bar got funnier, from the mordant, Oliver Hardy-esque Norm Peterson to his Stan Laurel-like sidekick, obnoxious Cliff Clavin. (The latter was responsible for the now-cliché catchphrase "Did I say that out loud?") A simple setting, great dialogue and a real sense that this was a place where everybody not only knew each other's names but would also know yours, too. Our Favorite Reason to Watch: Nooooorm! On the show they showed a clip of "Thanksgiving Orphans" - the scene where they are starting the food fight and Diane yells at them to stop and gets a bunch of cranberry sauce (or whatever that was) thrown at her. Have any of you seen the E! True Hollywood Story about Cheers? I've never seen it and want to. All I know is that they make Shelley Long sound like a real witch. |

TV Guide had an all time greatest sitcoms list, but I forget where Cheers ranked on that.

I vaguely remember that, Brian. TV guide did some other ranks too - "Thanksgiving Orphans" made it as one of the best episodes of all time, and Diane Chambers was one of the best TV characters of all time....or something like that. Wish I could remember more...

Thanksgiving Orphans
and Home Is The Sailor were the only 2 Cheers episodes that were considered "best" but that works.... they're 2 of my favorites. |

But I completely understand why its ranked higher. It did so much for television. If it weren't for All in the Family, many elements of Cheers would've never existed. |

I must admit I've never seen "All in the Family" - but from what I've read and heard, it dealt with a lot of pressing social and political issues. So I guess there's good reason for it to be up there.

Lol, Barwars. I grew up mostly in the UK, where they only had FOUR channels!
Thank GOD Channel 4 showed Cheers all the time. Otherwise, I may never have been exposed to that brilliant show at all!! The rest of the time I was stuck watching educational documentaries!! Damn public television!
