Question Potsie 'Weber' or 'Webber'?

*forwarded from old message board*

This site is a great source of information. I am glad a lot of people visit this site to post messages, trivia, questions, etc.

However, as a self-proclaimed defender of The Potsie Faith, I have one small nit to pick. Potsie Webber's last name is misspelled on the site information regarding the characters. It's spelled W-E-B-E-R on the site, when it's supposed to be spelled W-E-B-B-E-R.

I am not complaining. The only reason I brought it up, is because I had a trivial debate with someone about it. They told
me to go to the character information about on this site. However, in the episode "A Potsie Is Born" there is a sign with
the name WARREN WEBBER hanging up behind Potsie and the band as they perform the song "Mack the Knife."

Still, when others ask me questions I can't answer, I refer them to this site. Again, I think it is a good source of information.

Potsie

------------------

ok..I'll admit I haven't stopped thinking about this question, and it's driving me crazy!

Your absoultely right, it's spelled "Webber" on the banner in the "A Potsie Is Born" episode. And my friend Giuseppe in Italy who has the script for the episode tells me it's spelled Webber in that as well....

however...EVERY tv reference book that I've ever seen including some on Happy Days like "The Official Fonzie Scrapbook" spell it "W-e-b-e-r".. I have to admit I've never seen it spelled "Webber" in any article or other reference. In an official Paramount biography for Anson Williams it's spelled "Weber" in fact.. In the Laverne & Shirley episode, 'Excuse Me, May I Cut In?" he's clearly credited as "Anson Williams as Potsie Weber".

In my honest opinion, I think it was a mistake when they spelled it "Webber" in that episode. There were other mistakes like Fonzie saying he had his tonsils out when he was 6 years old and then much later there's an episode where he has them taken out. There's the whole Chuck Cunningham conspiracy.. The two Cunningham house addresses.. The multiple names for Ralph's parents..

My main question is does anybody know of any other times Potsie's last name was visible on a jacket or shirt or something else? I know in the episode where Fonzie, Potsie, and Roger are enlisted - he wears an army outfit and his name is sewn on there but I couldn't make it out clearly.

Further proof of the "Weber" name:

This is from Lori Marshall, daughter of Garry Marshall who of course created Happy Days:

-------

So here's the news: Potsie Weber was the friend of my mom's in high school. My dad always thought it was a funny name. His name was actually Raymond Weber and they called him "Potsie" as a nickname. When my dad wrote "Happy Days" he wrote many of the characters based on his high school friends, but he chose the name Potsie from one of my mom's high school friends. According to my mom's year book, his name is spelled "Weber." I know some places it might have been printed with two "b's" but I'd go with "Weber." Thanks!

Lori

I accept "Weber" instead of "Webber." I guess I was wrong and my friend who referred me to this site was correct. I am sorry I brought it up.

the answer to the descrepancy here is OBVIOUS; "WARREN WEBBER" was Potsie's STAGE NAME - he only used that when he was performing, his real name is "WEBER".

I think it's one of those things where character's last names in famous sitcoms, of any year, allow the spelling to be of both ways usually, for the fans sake, depending on the character and last name though..

Thanks for the info...didn't know that. Thought his last name was the same on all accounts (on stage or not) but could be interpreted as having his last name spelled another way also...
