Here's some "Heathcliff" trivia you ought to know:

1. Mel Blanc who provided the voice for Bugs Bunny,Daffy Duck,Tweety.Barney Rubble and others did the voice of Heathcliff
in all 3 series.

2. Paul Winchell provides the voice for Marmaduke and Phil Winslow,along with voice artists June Foray and Russi Taylor.

3. In "Heathcliff & The Dingbats",along with Mel Blanc came Frank Welker,the voice of Fred in the "Scooby-Doo" series.

Both "Heathcliff & The Dingbats" and "Heathcliff and Marmaduke"
were created by Joseph Ruby & Kenneth Spears(No relation to Britney). "Heathcliff & The Cadillac Cats" were done by Andy Heyward & Jean Chapolin,who would later be credited doing
"Inspector Gadget".

Actually, "Heathcliff" began life as a single-panel newspaper feature created by cartoonist George Gately in 1973, pre-dating Jim Davis's "Garfield" by about five years.

I mention this because many people confuse the two characters, who do have some basic similarities, i.e. both are obnoxious orange tabby cats who use their wits to either A) score food or B) stay one step ahead of their "masters" (anyone who's read these two strips knows who REALLY runs the Nutmeg and Arbuckle households!)

Heathcliff, while being a purely pantomine character in the comics, pretty much runs off at the mouth in both versions of the cartoon(voiced, as stated above in the previous post, by the legendary Mel Blanc). The Ruby-Spears version used the original character designs by George Gateley (although Grandpa Nutmeg never appeared in any of the episodes, at least not to my recollection...I may be wrong on this point.) The DIC version, on the other hand, was a bit more lively in the storytelling department(to me, one of the few shows put out by this company that's actually watchable and without those @#*%!!in' pro-social messages they always shoehorn into their cartoons!), and featured Grandpa Nutmeg in most of the episodes, along with a redesigned Grandma and Iggy. Plus, the addition of Hector, Wordsworth and Mongo made a lot of these stories funnier (Riff-Raff, on the other hand was dullsville...Heathcliff had way more personality!)

There's a very simularity between Heathcliff & Garfield: Heathcliff was created by George Gately 1n 1973. Garfield was created by
Jim Davis in 1978.

Heathcliff was voiced by the late Mel Blanc who died in 1988. Garfield was voiced by Lorenzo Music who died in 2001.

The "HEATHCLIFF' series of books contained many of the furry tabby's adventures with the Nutmeg family. The "GARFIELD" series of books only had Garfield,his owner Jon,his doggie sidekick Odie,and the rest.

Although,the "HEATHCLIFF" comic strip stopped in either 1999 or 2000,the "GARFIELD" franchise keeps going on. There's even a new movie starring the lasagna-eating,Monday-hating kitty called
"GARFIELD: THE MOVIE".

Oh,yeah! there was the Saturday-morning series "GARFIELD & FRIENDS" that tried to mirror out "HEATHCLIFF AND THE CADILLAC CATS".

LOVED Heathcliff! Only cartoon I can still watch as an adult. Currently on a Heathy kick and am looking for vhs/dvds of the show. Garfield, blah. Heathcliff had such great adventures that took him all over town, out to sea, to a shrink even! And gotta disagree with the previous poster, I actually liked Riff-Raff and company more. Their adventures were just a little more cool, Heathcliff always getting into fights and all.

But the Siamese Twins, Spike's Slave where Heathy goes good, and Phantom of the Garbage are great ones. Catillac Cats had the one set at the scary mansion where Riff-Raff tries to prove to Cleo's cat-pal (is that a word) that he and the guy's can brave the mansion for the night. Plus A Camping We Will Go as Cleo keeps beating Riff at competitive stuff. The one in the sewer, the one at the carnival at night, wow too many to mention.

The 1986 eps were a letdown though. Terrible animation and the stories sucked. But those '84 eps 20 years later are still great, the few I have on tape.

Growing up, I remember the DiC version better. I liked the Cadillac Cats and Riff-Raff's girlfriend Cleo was kinda hot with the leg-warmers.

After seeing the Ruby-Spears versions, the DiC episodes pale in comparison and their character redesigns were unnecessary and stupid.
