Everybody has their opinions on a movie. Among them is whether they believe a film is overrated and not what it is made out to be by the hype or underrated and not given a lot of credit that it deserves. There are no cut-and-dried or right and wrong answers when it comes to saying a film is over/underrated. It's all a matter of opinion.
I think the most overrated film I've ever seen is Titanic. All I liked were the action sequences and that's it. I remember seeing this for the first time after hearing all the rave reviews and reading all the hype about it. But when I saw the film I was disappointed. I probably would have liked it better if it was shortened a bit, about a little over two hours. And I rememeber that song by Celine Dion that was played every day on the radio ad nauseum. There are people who will disagree with me on this but to each his own. I prefer James Cameron's other works over this film. When it comes to underrated movies, one immediately springs to mind. That movie is Valley of the Dolls. It was given a BOMB rating by Leonard Maltin but I thought that was an overstatement after watching the film several times. It's more like a 2 1/2 star movie at most. Possibly Sharon Tate's best movie. I just don't understand why this film has been looked down upon by critics. I thought it was a cool movie. Another underrated film that I can think of is Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I thought that was a great movie! It's my favorite of the Indiana Jones series. I've always preferred this one when I was a kid and I still call it a favorite today. |

"28 Days" was horribly overrated. Sorry, I don't see why it was so darn popular when it was released.

Most underrated movie is Starwars:Episode 1, The Phantom Menace. It was a great sci-fi fantasy film that was miles above other films of that genre.
Most overrated movie is Lord of the Rings:Return of the King. It was long, boring and had endless scenes of characters staring at each other. For a while it looked like Frodo and Pipen were going to kiss. |

I remember that. Most everyone I spoke to who has seen it said they were disappointed in it. I thought it was great. |

When you look at Phantom Menace in the big picture of the Star Wars saga, the story does a good job of setting things up. |

Overrated:
I agree, 28 Days Later was overrated- it was an alright movie, but not fantastic Lord of the Rings, Night of the Living Dead (I just couldn't get into it- it was ok, but I rented it expecting to be blown away by it all), There's Something About Mary, Braveheart. Underrated: Shock Treatment (it's an underdog because it was marketed as the rocky horror sequel), Stella (not Bette Midler's best- but it's not as bad as the critics said). I also liked the Phantom Menace, I still haven't watched attack of the clones (saw a bit of it- didn't look too great)- but everyone liked the phantom menace when it came out, then turned on it (I've noticed people doing that with 'The Hours') |

I think Cheaper By The Dozen was overrated. I really liked it a lot, dont get me wrong, I just think it is overrated. They made it seem better than it really is. Its good, though!

Anyways... I believe "Chicago" was extremely overrated, "Moulin Rouge" which was 10x times better, received half of the respect. Another overrated film (but I actually love) is, "Scarface." Some people act as if it is the greatest movie ever made. Underrated... "Showgirls." People don't see the wonderful satire of Joe Eszterhas and Paul Verhoeven. |

Though a lot of people are going to wonder what is wrong with me I think that Braveheart is WAY overrated. So was Dances With Wolves.
