Default Charles was boring when he got nice.

He was good in the beginning. No match for the flawless Larry Linville who'd just exited but a solidly good, cultured character just the same was Stiers's Major Winchester. He became very disappointing once he started getting a little too good. Kinda like Fonzie on Happy Days when he got too good.

I don't know...

I liked when they took Charles off his high horse in the later seasons.
In the beginning, he was just like Burns; a stuffed shirt for Hawk and BJ to take potshots at. Having another foe for the others to ridicule would've been pointless.
Charles was able to keep his aritocratic edge, but he wasn't above joining in on some hijinks. It was nice that Hawk, BJ and Charles became friends as the show finished its run.

Good analogy. And agreed that Charles was fairly dull as a nice guy.Had the show lasted just one more season Winchester have become a total goody-goody.

I'm not so sure. At the end of G, F, & A, some of his comments proved he could still be the old Charles.
He was more "good" than Frank because he wasn't an idiot and had been brought up to be at least somewhat nice.

At times Charles was a real idiot. Remember whewn he confessed to Mulcahy and asked if it was really possible that he (Charles) snored. Nothing worse than a conceited and stuck up louse who rewally believes his or her own conceit. But that was PREFERABLE TO CHARLES BECOMING MR. NICE GUY.

and some jokes Hawk made glimmered his old womanizing self. Like the time he siad "I can't say that I love all of you... but I've loved as many of you as I could." And when he told BJ. "You take the lips, I take the rest of her."

The show started to decline after Larry Gelbart left.

After the fifth season, it seemed like the writers were struggling to find a decent plotline. I mean, every now and then there would be a good episode.

I liked Charles both ways. It shows growth. I think from a standpoitn of storytelling, the brutality of war shown Charles that there was no egalitarianism going on during a war! So he softened!

I agree with you! I think they ALL got boring when they became so PC. I think this show really jumped the shark when Radar left. I just pre-ordered my season 6 set today. I can't wait to get it. It is my favorite season with Charles. He was such a boor!

True.
PC = those attacking so-called "wokism," which they can't define.
