a new Van Dyke and Moore show?

I think it would be nice if Dick and Mary teamed up for a new half-hour situation comedy, but not as Rob and Laura Petrie but as another married couple. After all, Bill Cosby and his tv wife on "The Cosby Show" teamed up for another series as a married couple. I still think Dick and Mary have terrific chemistry and perhaps Carl Reiner can come up with a contemporary series which might interest them.

If that is not the case I wouldn't mind a series of Dick/Mary specials per season maybe a couple where they do play the Petrie's and include Rosie, Ann Guilbert, Larry, and Carl.

I see no reason why they cannot resume their roles as Rob and Laura in a new show. After all, we did not get to see them together with Richie on the special and we only briefly saw Laura with her granddaughter (we assume, Richie's daughter).

Also, since they really didn't cover what happened to Rob and Laura in the intervining 40 years, it is possible the Petries could have had more children after the show ended and that could be incorporated into a new series.

I agree that DVD and MTM have, and probably always will have, terrific chemistry together...it's a rare thing for that kind of chemistry to exist between two actors for this long, but DVD and MTM are not ordinary actors...

However, IMO, Carl Reiner has reached the end of the line as a comedy writer...what was the last really funny thing he worked on? And this is NOT a sarcastic question, I honestly can't think of a thing Reiner has done in the last twenty years that's been any good.... if someone out that can help me out with this, please do... although I never liked Reiner in front of the camera as Alan Brady, he was one of the greatest TV writers ever...maybe the best individual TV comedy writer ever...certainly top 5

THe original DVD show is the all time classic sitcom...I remember his "2000 year old man" stuff with Mel Brooks in the early to mid 70s was great... And I'm sure he probably wrote some good stuff in the 80's although I can't think of anything off the top of my head...

But this last reunion show was a long way from the standards he set way back then...

I didn't watch the TV Land award show, and so I've only recently seen a clip of him asking the DVD show cast up there on stage, "Can I get a commitment from you all to do the (reunion) show if it's good?"

My only question is, why did they all agree to do it? It wasn't that good...I'm sure the cast enjoyed seeing each other again after all this time, and it probably felt good to be on a set together again, but the magic just wasn't there...

I'd watch in a heartbeat, if it were ever done, but Mary move back to LA, or Dick to NY to do a new show? Nah. It'll never happen. Let it ride. We'd better just be thankful for what they've given us.

You raise some interesting questions.

I checked the imdb, and it appears that the reason you can't think of anything that's he's written in the last 20 years is because he really didn't write anything in that time! He wrote a couple of Steve Martin comedies in the early 80's (most notably "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid"), but it appears that most of his efforts since then have been acting with one or two directorial attempts.

As with any actor, I suppose it depends on personal preference. I thought he was very good in Oceans Eleven. He also gave a very moving performance as an aging comic suffering from Alzheimer's on a Showtime series about the same time. I don't watch much network television so I haven't seen any of his other appearances.

Yes, I totally forgot about "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid"...I remember when that came out, and I liked it...I have it on video. I thought it was very clever and funny the way he used film clips from various movies to put that story together.... Thanks for reminding me..

I've never seen Oceans 11, and I don't get Showtime, so I can't comment on his performances in those...

The reason I didn't like Reiner the actor on Dick Van Dyke is because I thought he was very annoying in that role...but then again, I think he WANTED Alan Brady to be annoying, so I guess you could say he did do a great job on that...

I think Turner Classic ran Oceans 11 recently, and I missed it...I actually do mean to see that one of these days, so next time I see it's on, I'll catch it, or tape it... I didn't even know Reiner was in that one, but I know it had a huge all star cast

Steve is right, I can't see any type of series happening but I think another TV movie or some type of special might be possible. We have seen them work together twice in the last 2 years so lets keep our fingers crossed and hope they will be inspired again soon.
