Thumbs up 10 Questions: John Francis Daley

10 Questions: John Francis Daley

Ten answers from Freaks and Geeks' Sam Weir.

By Ken P.
IGN FilmForce

I've said it before and I'll say it again – Freaks and Geeks was one of the best shows ever produced for television.

Which is probably why it only lasted 18 episodes.

I think it's a television law that quality must be rewarded with swift cancellation, while abominations continue to roam the land, menacing viewers with inane writing (and even lamer metaphors, but you get the point).

Presenting the teenage tribulations of Sam and Lindsay Weir, and their assorted friends and enemies, Freaks and Geeks was the first (and so far only) show that presented the teenagers as they really are, and what high school is really like. Well-written, funny, and emotional, it was… Well, it was life. Not a comedy, not a drama, and nothing as hackneyed as a "dramedy," it merely existed as one of the most well-crafted shows ever to get slaughtered upon the network altar of quick returns and poor judgement.

Let it not be said that dark clouds don't have silver linings, because the complete run of Freaks and Geeks – plus a bevy of bonus materials – has been released in a spiffy 6-disc DVD set from Shout Factory.

If you're a fan you've probably already got the set on your shelf, but if you've not yet experienced the show, I urge you to do so.

Or go watch some more Relic Hunter. It's your call.

We recently got a chance to ask our patented (it's pending… really…) 10 Questions of the Freaks and Geeks cast, and we'll be presenting them over the next few weeks. We've also got a few surprises in store, so be sure to keep an eye out in the near future.

First up is Sam Weir himself, John Francis Daley…

1. What is your favorite piece of music?
"Mr. Blue Sky" – ELO.

2. What is your favorite film?
Impossible to pick a favorite out of the hundreds of movies that I love.

3. What is your favorite TV program, past or current?
It would have to be either The Office or (sigh) Freaks and Geeks.

4. What do you feel has been your most important professional accomplishment to date?
Without a doubt, the most important professional accomplishment would have to be being a part of Freaks and Geeks. Nothing comes close.

5. Which project do you feel didn't live up to what you envisioned?
No comment. I'm too young in my career to start burning bridges.

6. What is your favorite book?
Either East of Eden by Steinbeck or Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

7. If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
The one thing I'd change about the industry is the general sense of sleaze and dishonesty that comes from so many of the people involved.

8. Who – or what – would you say has had the biggest influence on your career?
My family has had the most influence on my career. They told me that I could do anything I wanted with my life, and then supported me the whole way.

9. What is your next project?
I've just completed working on the film Waiting starring Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris and Luis Guzman and I'm doing a pilot for ABC called The Furst Family.

10. What is the one project that you've always wanted to do, but have yet to be able to?
The one project that I've always wanted to do is a feature film that I'll write and direct. That, and to star in Venezuelan softcore porn. But that goes without saying.

The poor kid is doing another show for ABC. Talk about bad karma. Every show he has been on has been cancelled. The last show he did, Regular Joe, lasted 4 episodes.

I've only seen (as far as I remember) John Francis Daley on Freaks and Geeks, but man he's good on this show. The way he'd act when talking to Cindy or laughing along with Bill and Neal, it was a great, natural effortless performance. Great performances by everyone really, even the minor characters were great.

Truer words were never spoken.

John Daley was my favorite character, hands down. Loved 'em all, but he was the best. He's an ELO fan.. how can ya beat it?

I wish him much luck on his latest show.
