Default What does LP stand for?

When I look up albums on websites, I see the term LP. What does it stand for? I'm curious.

Lp doesn't mean album? I mean, I once looked up Rhythm Nation by Janet Jackson and I got Janet Jackson's LP, Rhythm Nation". So that meant Janet Jackson's Long Playing Rhythm Nation?" That sounds a little weird, doesn't it?

Well, the term is used to differentiate between an EP (a record with three or four songs) and a single/45 (usually two songs). "LP" isn't used as much in the CD age as it was when vinyl was king.

A compact disc and a cassette are long play records just as much as 12-inch, 33 1/3 RPM vinyl records are. Another reason you don't hear the term "long play" so much is because the record industry pushes long-play-friendly recording formats almost exclusively - because they have a much longer shelf life than singles.

Both long play vinyl records and compact discs, by the way, were created primarily with the classical music market in mind. Ironically, pop revolutionized both formats!
