As much as didn't want to admit it, they liked each other. Also, what other friends did the each of them have? It seemed as if Willis or even George were there for one another, at some point. How about the episode where Tom joined George's bowling team? Or that KKK episode.

I don't think they became friends until the 80's. They hated each other in 1975-LOL |

I don't know if Tom disliked George as much as George disliked Tom. Afterall Tom never called George the N word! But then again that would have been difficult for him wouldn't it!!

Helen and Louise were arguing and Tom said-"come on ladies, there's no need to fight over crazy George" And then George hears him and says-"who you calling crazy honkey? And then tom said="don't call me honkey, i would you like if I called you ni%%"? And then George turns to louise with a surprised look on his face and said-"he called me Ni%%% |

and a perfect example of how the writers took racism, and made it hilarious, without REALLY offending anyone. |

Dinner Party for Harry is one of my favorite episodes of the series -- if not my favorite of all time. |

well he didn't really call him "one" he just asked the question how would you like if I did! George came right out and called him and a few others honkey.

If you look at it, Tom was the perfect striaght man for George's insults. He would say something every blue moon to open George up, but he kinda just played it off. That's why i thought they were friends. But here is the clincher: Tom wasn't a racist. How could he be? His wife was black. And in a way, he knew George didn't REALLY mean it. George was from the streets and, in a way, Tom was too. So I'm sure he heard the word honkey before. And besides George was always laughing when he called him that. He was just outspoken on honkey talk, that's all. LOL
How about that stripper episode. Who was up there with George dancing, Tom. Who was in jail with George one episode, Tom. The bowiling episode, who did George put on the team, Tom. |

Nerrad you're right. George liked Tom in his own way. They were stranded on a raft in Hawaii too. If I saw an episode guide I'll bet 1/3 of the plots have them in some scheme together.
It just occurred to me that the name Tom is itself a joke as in "Uncle Tom". Of course in this show Tom wasn't a black trying to be white, but a white who married a black. |

Tom was tolerant of George. But George only tolerated Tom because Lionel was married to his daughter. Besides that Louise and Helen were the best of friends! So that's what Tom had going for him. Now Bunker is another story, agree?!
