Question Teens and the death penalty

I am asking this question to find out how everyone feels about teens who commit crimes.

Recently a 16 year old in California walked up to a Highway patrolman who was leaving a court building after testifying on traffic warrants. As the officer was leaving the building a teen walked up to him and shot him in the head. The teen was caught and said that he did it because he was trying to impress a local street gang.

The funeral for the officer was held today. It was very sad to see his wife was barely able to walk out of the church because she is so upset, the officer also leaves behind two young children.

Because the person who shot the officer is considered a minor, he will not, if found guilty in a trial, be given the death penalty.

My question to this post is do you think a teen who has committed such a crime should be given the death penalty?

No. He should spend the rest of his life behind bars. The death penalty now doesn't even hurt. By getting life, it makes you think about what you did for the rest of your life.

I absolutely agree. The death penalty is kinda against my religion, anyway.

I think the death penalty should only be used in extreme conditions -- when people become serious threats to society.

I'm not "against" the death penalty. My problem is, it's painless now. My state(Alabama) had the Electric chair until about a year or two ago. We don't fool around.

Yeah, I guess that's probably true, but even if it wasn't against my religion, I'd still think life in prison is a better (or worse...however you want to look at it) punishment for a criminal. As Brent said, that person should have to be reminded of his crime for the rest of his life.

I think the death penalty is warranted in ALL first degree murder cases no matter what the circumstances are. Because that means you planned it and it was intentional. No excuse for that. And I agree with Brent88 that the death penalty is far to painless today. I mean they even have to dull the area where they inject you so you won't feel the pain of the shot! How nuts is that.

I am not a fan of the death penalty...at ALL. Now, people who pose a HUGE and I mean HUGE threat to society (Sadaam, the Sniper people) I think they deserve the death penalty...b/c God forbid they break out. But besides that, I really think it's sick (my gov't teacher informed us of the ways the death penalty is performed in the US, gas chamber, lethal injection, shooting line, and the electric chair and then he informed us of a video he saw in some class of an execution on the electric chair, yea, that was enough for me). So yea, I'm gonna say I don't think people ESPICIALLY teens should have the death penalty. I also think there are so many flaws in that system. I mean, I know that there are guidelines people have to follow, but depending on the harshness of the judge, one person may have life in prison for a murder but another could have the death penalty. I dunno, I just, I disagree with it. And also, I've always had this odd fear of being framed and receiving the death penalty and I'm scared of death...so yea, I think there are way too many flaws in the system and what right does a person have to say whether we live or die? Two wrongs don't make a right. People always told me I should be a lawyer b/c when I'm involved in debates I kick serious ass. I've had random people comment on my debating skills, but I'm so worried of screwing up a case and having someone die because of it that I can't do it I couldn't handle it.

So to sum it all up, teens espicially should not have the death penalty.

Oh and to comment on the people who think that they shouldn't have the death penalty b/c it's painless, well that's only in some places and also, I dunno I still see it as torture in a form, I have a really weak stomach when it comes to that kinda stuff, I get really emotional. I watched some guy recieve lethal injection on a tv show, and he was even brought back to life, but I mean, I was hysterical. I can't handle it...at all.

The death penalty is too easy. It's a totally painless death for these creeps. They should be jailed with NO amenities. Nowadays these people get gyms, television, movies, etc because if they don't, they say their civil rights are being taken away! What happened to chopping up rocks all day and eating just bread and water? Let's bring that back! And NO TELEVISION!!
