In case you missed it, and I wouldn't blame you if you did, this weekend marks the end of Turn Off TV Week, a time when North American residents are encouraged to leave their sets off for a whole week while presumably trying to enjoy other activities that they normally wouldn't be pursuing while watching TV. I don't think I could possibly go without TV for a week---not with the hockey playoffs on every night---and I know most of you have the same problem. Yet many of us can agree that there aren't as many good shows on as there used to be, especially in prime time, and that the glut of reality shows would make going without TV a little easier.
On this site, I've noticed a few people that have their own ideas about what's wrong with TV today and many of them are very insighful and make a lot of sense. If you're one of those people that are feeling turned off about what's on the networks today, I have for you a few articles that are from the Toronto Sun that represent the views of TV critic Bill Brioux that offer a few ideas of his own as to the current state of television today. I leave them for you here just to give you something else to think about. Here they are: Part 1 http://www.canoe.com/Television/apr19_tvoff-sun.html Part 2 http://www.canoe.com/Television/apr20_tvoff-sun.html Part 3 http://www.canoe.com/Television/apr21_save-sun.html Part 4 http://www.canoe.com/Television/apr22_cancon-sun.html Part 5 http://www.canoe.com/Television/apr23_turnoff-sun.html I think he's bang on with his comments regarding reality series. As for scripted shows, it may indeed be better to get the DVDs instead of waiting for certain networks to bring back your favorite classic series, but for now I'll wait until the prices go down. |

if "Frasier" and "Survivor" werent on.... I could do it.
But theres no way in hell Ill miss a new episode of either of those shows. TV Turnoff Week in something like July -- I could handle. But definately not when series are coming to an end. |

after reading those, i must reinstate my arguement that Ive had many times before -- reading is no better than TV.
It can be just as harmful, and its more time consuming. People who bash TV, but support books are closeminded. |

Definitely.
I don't even really watch TV anymore -- the only thing I really use the TV for is to tape stuff...and to watch my DVD's. But I could go without those for a week. |

Frasier.... done. Ok.... I could handle TV Turnoff Week now. Would I want to?? No. Could I?? Yes, now that Frasier is over. |

I was forced to slap her. I just had to reach out and slap her. So I did. I mean, reading is just as time-consuming as watching TV is. Books can easily dumb down a person just as TV can. And those who say that all books are better than soap operas need to read a couple of Jackie Collins novels. |

I could never comply with Turn Off TV Week no matter when it occurred. TV is my biggest hobby. I think I am addicted to it. It would be very hard to go w/o Mama's Family, Family Ties, and Cheers for one whole week. Just couldn't happen.

As long as I had something to do with all my time. I could never just sit at my house, alone, and NOT have the TV on. |
