I remember Checking In. I can remember watching all four episodes. I was young back then, so I never knew how many shows there were. My question is, why did she leave in the place? The Jeffersons was one show that bored me during the final years. And I stopped watching every week.

Checking In only had 4 episodes. Are you asking why the character Florence Johnston left or why Marla Gibbs left? My answer to those two questions is Florence was offered ajob as an executive housekeeper and Marla probaby wanted a chance to be the star of her own series. I never saw Checking In, I only saw the Checking In Pilot which was a JEFFERSONS episode. I would love to see a Checking In episode with the Checking Theme song and opening And closing credits someday. |

Marla got her chance to be the lead in a much better series: 227. Funny that show started up almost immediately after the Jeffersons ended, about the only case I can think of off the top of my head of a performer jumping from one hit show into another hit in the very next season playing a completely different character. It's as if she had 227 in her hip pocket as a safety net for the day that The Jeffersons bit the dust.
Marla seems like she's nobody's fool. I read that she kept her day job as some kind of clerk during the first 2 years of The Jeffersons just in case it didn't work out for her on the show. She started up in acting late too. She's in her 70s now. |

She also started up her own theater in L.A. from what I understand.

I was very shocked to see that she was born in 1931. She looked much younger on The Jeffersons as did Isabel Sanford.
I couldn't believe that Marla Gibbs was 55 when 227 started in the fall of 1985. She sure didn't look it at all. 227 was a good show and I'm glad it's on TVOne. It would be great if they would pick up the rights to The Jeffersons as well. |

I wish TV ONE would pick up the Jeffersons because they probably would show it UNCUT like they do the Good Times eps |

Funny, I always thought that Marla was a mature performer. I could believe that she was born in 1931. In 227 you could see her facial wrinkles. What threw me for a loop was the ages of Isabel and Sherman Hemsley. Isabel looked excellent for her age.
I heard about her having that theater as well. This woman is very smart. On a side noter, do you all remember how Florence used to go nuts for Billy Dee Williams on the show and then he showed up and she didn't believe it was him? That was funny. On the Hughleys she and Billy Dee were DL Hughley's biological parents. They also played Hill Harper's parents in a film I saw a few years back in which Haper played an HIV+ inmate. I have to go to imdb.com to see the name of the movie. The gorgeous Rae Dawn Chong played Harper's girlfriend and eventual wife in the film. It was a serious drama.

Actually, I did wanted both Florence/Marla questions answered. I'd forgotten. It had been so long. Come to think, I can't even remember watching all four episodes as I stated earlier. It may have been the pilot show.
