Default How Coach Died

according to www.cheersboston.com....

Nicholas Colasanto was born in New York, New York. Nicky had a very credible career in the film business before he found a spot on Cheers. His most notable role was in the film Raging Bull where he played Tommy Como. Nick passed away on February 12, 1985. He died half-way through the season on Cheers. The next season they added Coach’s death into the script. He died of a heart ailment in Studio City, California.

Yeah, he'd been sick for quite some time. According to Ted Danson, Nick Colasanto was having a hard time remembering lines toward the end. Due to his heart disease, he wasn't getting enough oxygen to his brain.

Is that when they started making up silly excuses where Coach was? Or was he just sick at the time?

I have always heard rumors that he might have died of aids. He used to hang around Rock Hudson and he died of it around the same time I think. I have not been able to find any information on Coach about him being married or having any kids. You can see the sickness in him from season 1 to season 3. Season 1 he was a little plump. His face was round. Starting season 2 he started losing weight. By season 3 he was thin as a rail. However he died he was a great, great asset to Cheers. Long Live Coach!!!!!

Nick was sick and in and out of the hospital, so he wasn't available to film. So thats when the writers started making up excuses why you didnt see Coach. It wasn't till he died that they actually made it for sure in the show. Nicholas Colasanto was a genius and we all miss him. RIP Nick

He made his mark in Hollywood as a tv director.

He directed episodes of "Hawaii 5-0", "Starsky & Hutch", and "CHiPS".

Danson told a story of after Colosanto dying, he would find napkins with lines written on them.

Must've been tough on NBC. In 1985 alone they lost the Coach on Cheers, and the two elderly ladies who played bailiffs on Night Court. And maybe others from shows I'm forgetting.

They died pretty far apart -- Rock passed away on October 2, 1985 from AIDS, nearly 8 months after Nick passed on.

I never heard any rumors about Nick passing away from AIDS.

And I'd also like to add that Coach and Woody were two of my favorite sweet guys!

Yes, RIP Coach - he was the greatest.

Apparently, this happened when things on the set were getting worse with Shelley Long and the rest of the cast. But from what I've heard things were never like that between Shelley and Nick...which makes me wonder why the other cast members got SO pissed off at her. I mean, I know the reasons, but I wonder what was so different about Nick so that he and Shelley still kept a great friendship till his death. Does anybody have any clues?
