While there are a couple great episodes in season 1 (Vitameatavegemin and The Freezer are two of my favorites), many of them are not as good, IMO as other seasons. I don't want to blaspheme on Easter Sunday, but I even like the Connecticut episodes better than season 1

I only like very few eps of the Connecticut era (Lucy does the Tango, Country Club dance, The tulips(just the crazy lawnmower part) and Ragtime band)

Two of my favorite episodes of any season are in Connecticut. The one where they go to see "The Most Happy Fella" took place after they move to the country, and the way Ethel yells at Fred and shuts him up near the end of the barbecue episode makes it a classic!

I've always been a first season cheerleader for several reasons.
  • Two of my favorite musical acts are in this season. One is in "The Audition" when we get to see Desi performing 'Babalu.' This performance shows off his charisma and sexiness on stage, and is, in my opinon, his best performance of the whole series. It is easy to see why he was so popular in the nightclubs. My other favorite is in "The Diet," when he and Lucy perform 'Cuban Pete' and are so great together--both the singing and the dancing. So cute!
  • Some of my favorite scenes occur in this season:

    - The 'Slowly I Turned' routine always cracks me up in the "Ballet" (And I always get a kick out of hearing Desi laughing in the background when he wasn't even in the scene!)

    - College dorm life got me used to putting up with hearing bangs and other disturbing noises coming from the floor above, so the last scene from "Breaking the Lease" when Lucy and Ricky bring the band into their apartment to have a late night jam to annoy Fred and Ethel was always hilarious

    - "Ethel to Tilly" - crazy, unbelievable concept, but somehow that line was still funny

    - Vitameatavegamin. Need I say more?

    - Lucy's encounter with the faux fruit in the "Lucy's Schedule"

    - Ricky's encounter with a strange hair contraption in "Ricky Thinks He's Getting Bald"

    - Lucy's "Be a Pal" lip-sync disaster -- some parts of that were very strange (animals? c'mon!), but still cute
  • "Lucy is Jealous of a Girl Singer (Dancer, whatever)" is in my top three favorites of the whole series
  • Overall, I think this season had the best energy of all of the seasons. Everything was new--you could tell that the writers were still trying to figure things out character-wise, but you could also tell that the four cast members were having a lot of fun acting it all out. In the later seasons (especially in the LDCH), I think it shows through a little bit that Lucy and Desi were having problems. They looked older and sometimes even tired, Desi's voice was even louder when he yelled at Lucy, and some of the romance that really showed through in the first few seasons was missing. But that first season was great because the chemistry between Lucy and Desi was very obvious; the two still appeared young and genuinely looked like they were having fun. So that is probably my main reason for liking the season 1 so much. I love the romance in ILL just as much as the comedy.

Ah...dorm life. I got lucky...I was on the top floor. But I got plenty of noise from next door.

Geez, talk about a fan club for season one, and after reading everything you said i change my vote. Season one had some great moments but only the first few shows were stinkers, how's that? They did 35 and maybe 5 that i thought were weak as the characters weren't established yet!

I love the one where they go see "The Most Happy Fella" too.

I like when she gives that guy behind her the orange drink!

The songs from that show were real big hits for quite a while too! I read that Desilu had invested in the show, hence the promo for it.

Desi auditioned for that play a long time before ILL to play the lead. He was given a tutor in order to lose the accent but he replied he came back 'more Cuban than before'
