You turned the channel?

Apparently now you are a holy roller.

So some of your favorite sitcom characters get drunk.
So what?
It's a comedic device first of all.

Secondly, it lends itself to let main characters say things they would never say otherwise.

And besides third of all, you've got to be kidding me Solomon, that you have not been drunk within the last 2 years.

The way you post, man, you better have.

hmmmm - so in your expert opinion, who does give us a good drunken portrayal of their character?

I liked Jack Tripper in the episode "A Night Not To Remember",and I liked Archey Bunker in the episode where Archey is trapped in the cellar

two of the best drunken portrayals of their characters had to have come from friends...

in TOW Ross Finds Out.... Jennifer Aniston's Rachel gets drunk and tells her true feelings to Ross . It is comical when she talks on the phone to him an how she gets the guys cell phone when she is drunk and the poor guy on his date with rachel.

TOW Ross is Fine... David Schwimmer's comical yet sad portrayal as he invites Rachel and Joey over to his apt to show that he is fine with them dating each other. It takes him a while but he realizes that he can't deal with this development and becomes even sadder.

Archie trapped in the cellar drinking the Polish vodka was a CLASSIC!

Also, anytime Dick Van Dyke would play a drunk (in skits and the hypnotist episode).

Carlton the Doorman on Rhoda

The time Margaret got drunk and Trapper and Hawkeye had to sober her up quickly - she did it really well!

and not in a sitcom, but the best drunk portrayal HAD to be Foster Brooks!

I just seen the ep with Archie being drunk and it wasn't too bad. I guess it was because he wasn't falling around.

I think I know what you mean about how drunks can be portrayed. But yeah, the ones I've all liked don't ham it up and play it more for real. That one with Arch was just hilarious imo!

Also, being the daughter of an alcoholic, I don't usually find it amusing (especially for real), but some of the portrayals have been pretty fun - as long as it isn't "forced".

Which reminds me, Rebecca played it pretty funny when she skipped out on her wedding to Colcord. You can just picture how much she must have "stunk" with the booze and cigarettes and then coming on to Sam like she was.

What's wrong with Taxi and The Odd Couple? Both have been in syndication for years. The Odd Couple for decades on channel 11 until seinfeld came along.
