Was Roseanne taped in front of an audience? I always thought so at first but there are times when I feel like the show was screened in front of an audience and not actually filmed in front of one.

I think it was mostly taped before a live studio audience. Last night's Thanksigivng episode was a deadringer for a studio audience because at the dinner table Mark was the only one sitting on the one side of the table with his back to the audience and even then he was crouched real low and slumped in his seat and leaning to the side. There were three other chairs with their backs to the audience too and no one sat in them. Becky, David and Leon were standing up eating and it looked real awkward. But they couldn't sit down or then they would block everyone else at the table from the audience. LOL

What about in episodes that have scenes that take place in cars?

I think sitcoms that have live studio audiences have scenes that are pre-filmed and they just show those parts on the monitors to the audience. And of course some scenes are post-filmed as well. Its probably a combination depending on what is needed time-wise and location-wise.

Well, I kinda doubt that it is filmed in front of a studio audience, because, in some episodes, at the table, you can see the back of the kitchen, and theres a wall there. Im also pretty sure that the entire first floor of the house is one set, and it would be weird to have an audience if two rooms are facing one way (living room, kitchen) and two facting the opposite way (bedroom, bathroom)
