Lightbulb Musicology on MTV

wow, I hardly watch MTV but just aminute ago I flipped to it, and they were showing Prince's Musicology video!!!

I haven't seen a Prince video on MTV since 7 and The Morning Papers in early 1993.

Yeah, I was going to post a thread about this because I do find it kind of extraordinary that they are at least playing his video, but they are actually giving it quite heavy rotation. I've seen it at night for the past three days, and this morning.

I remember in 1999, MTV made a big deal when they world premiered "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold," but they only played it about 2 times after that.

I need to start watching MTV again if Prince is in heavy rotation. I think they banned him years ago because he was supposed to perform on '93's MTV Movie Awards and it was around that time when Prince decided to do the unpronouncable symbol name change. I'm assuming Prince and MTV had issues possibly over the name or his performance on the show, but he ended up not performing and MTV rarely showed his videos after that. I remember Nona Gaye was a guest on MTV Jams around the time the "Love Sign" video she did with Prince was out. They featured her segment after segment talking about it, and still they didn't show the video. On top of everything else there is to hate about MTV, I didn't like them using their power that way, even if Prince wasn't my favorite artist.

Anyway, it's good to hear they're showing the new video. I recently got the Musicology cd, and it's good. It's not spectacular like Sign O The Times or Purple Rain, but it's definitely his most listenable, enjoyable album since Gold Experience. There's no heavy religious talk or songs about being screwed by record companies, just a nice solid collection of pop, mild rock, r&b and funk tracks. Not all over the place like his last comeback "Rave"

I never understood why MTV quit showing him cold turkey after the name change in 93 (because even in early 1993, the video for 7 had high enough rotation to go to #1 on the video countdown, and I remember seeing The Morning Papers and Damn U a few times each). I know MTV slowly phased out a lot of 80's artists with declining popularity at the time, but I didn't get how MTV went from being all about Prince (Diamonds And Pearls was really MTV supported, and even Graffiti Bridge got quite a bit of support, I remember MTV having a special about the premiere of GB when it came out, and showing clips too) to never showing him again. Even after Most Beautiful Girl was such a hit, MTV still didn't touch that video. It just made little sense to me because to me Prince was one of those artists that really helped to define the station.

I left my recorder on to tape four hours worth of MTV videos as I left for work this morning. It was good to see them show Prince's "Musicology" video twice within a three hour period. I was like "yeah!! alright!!" But then it seemed like they showed Outkast, D-12, Alicia Keys and Kanye West every hour on the hour. Anyway, it was still good to see Prince in the mix. I'll be interested in seeing how high on the chart his album debuts after its release TOMORROW (hint)
