Does anyone know the name of that song that Fred would sing? Here are some of the lyrics"And how would I be sure if this were on thee, If I didn't care". I am not sure if those are the exact lyrics. I saw him singing that song a lot in season 4. One was the episode where Fred had returned from St. Louis and he told Lamont to hold the stethoscope to his ear. Another episode was where Lamont was in a political debate and Fred was singing to the camera.

The lead singer of that group Bill Kenny was openly gay. That kind of explains why Fred wiggles in the air while he's singing it!

Which brings me to my next question. Why would the Fred Sanford character imitate a gay singer? |

Bill Kenny was not gay at all... He was married three times. The reason Redd did the Bill Kenny impression is because Bill and Redd were good friends. At the time of Sanford and Son they were working together in nightclubs in LA and Las Vegas. They also appeared together on The Merv Griffin Show. Redd did his imitation sort of as a tribute to Bill.

Who in the hell told you that?? Bill Kenny wasn't gay at all... The reason Redd did his Bill Kenny imitation is because Bill and Redd were working together at the time in nightclubs and lounges. Back in those days nearly every comic/entertainer did their Bill Kenny imitation. It was almost a standard routine. Since Bill and Redd were so close (and Redd was a genius) he always got a great reaction from the audience.

I read somewhere that Redd paid royalties to the Ink Spots every time he used that song on S&S. True??

False... Jack Lawrence wrote If I Didn't Care, not The Ink Spots. The Ink Spots had nothing to do with the song other than they recorded it and made it a huge hit. The only person that could have possibly been paid royalties would have been Jack Lawrence. At the time of Sanford & Son Bill Kenny was the only surviving member of the original Ink Spots... but the only way he would have seen money from that show is if they played the actual recording which they never did. There probably were some legal issues with the song being sung on the show but it didn't involve Bill Kenny. People often don't realize how huge The Ink Spots recording of that tune was... today it is the 6th best selling single of all time at 19 million copies worldwide!

Some song about jelly. I think he sang that a few times. Or at least once. |

![]() THIS is why I LOVE this forum. Where else can you get these little-known, hard to find details about the most trivial aspects of television shows you've watched for years? |
