I can`t believe

Grady was only 43

Fred was only 50

They looked a lot older then that.

I know. I wonder how long it took them to get into make-up for their roles. There were a whole slew of black actors on shows in the 70s playing much older characters: Sherman Hemsley on the Jeffersons, Robert Guilliame in Soap (his hair was completely white in Soap, but gradually it got darker on Benson), and John Amos on Good Times. Amos was on the Lena Horne episode of Sanford and Son's 2nd season playing one of Fred's buddies and he really looked like an old man with grey receding hair, shabby clothes and a pot belly.

Yeah they both looked well over 55
