I've been knowing a while now, but when I first found out how much older she was than George, I was shocked. George looked older than she did on the show.

For years, I thought one or both of them was fibbing about their age, but middle aged women don't usually lie and say that they're older than they are. Black women tend to age well though.
As for Sherman, he looked middle aged in the 70s. I'm still not convinced that he's 65 or 66. He looks a decade older. |

Isabel Sanford looked awesome for her age; and I was shocked when I found out that she was almost 20 years older than her Televison Husband on the show; he looked older than her

I never realized she was that much older than Sherman. She didn't look it.

I cannot believe that Isabel Sanford was 58 years old during the first season of The Jeffersons..What an incredible looking woman; she looked at least 2 decades younger...

Norman Lear said in an interview that they made Sherman's hair look gray when he was on All in the Family and during the first season of the Jeffersons, to make him look older since the character of George was older than Sherman was in real life. They also did the same thing with John Amos during the first season of Good Times he said. I don't know why they stopped adding gray to their hair after the first seasons though.

George got younger as each season went on from 1973 to 1985. In 1973 George looked 55-58 and in 1985 George looked 41-44 |

LOL at George aging backwards. Actually to me, it looked like he began coloring his hair dark in the later seasons. He got fat and bald in the 80s too. Still he had energy. What show today would cast all middle aged black people as the stars? After Mike Evans and Berlinda Tolbert quit there wasn't anyone in this show who was under 40.
