Tim Brooks, a Lifetime cable exec, told today's (Thursday) Los Angeles Times that the ploy was a "blatant" effort to manipulate ratings.

It seems like a smart move for Nickelodeon/Nick & Nite, but I wouldn't want to be one of the rival cable networks with dropping ratings.

No, I don't think you understand. What's going to happen is this: instead of Nickelodeon and Nick At Nite programming showing up in the Nielsen ratings as just "Nickelodeon," they're going to split it into two separate networks. Nickelodeon series, such as Rugrats and Spongebob Squarepants, will still show up in the Nielsen ratings as "Nickelodeon," while Nick At Nite programming, such as Cheers and Roseanne, will show up in the Nielsen ratings as "Nick At Nite." Same network, still wholly owned by Viacom.
