Yeah, I know, another fic!

I really should be doing other things atm, but oh well...... Enjoy!

"Mommy, what's this?" Ten-year-old Elena Basso walked up to her mother, carrying some letters in her hands. CD was sitting on her bed, while she folded laundry. She looked at the little girl with long, blonde hair and blue eyes. Although she was rapidly growing taller like her parents, she was still their baby to them. Elena had an expression on her face that showed a mixture of hurt and confusion.

"Let me see what you have there," CD said and reached out her hand. Elena hopped on the bed next to her mom and handed her the frayed, yellowed slips of paper. CD skimmed her eyes over them, and felt a knot tighten in her stomach. "Where did you find these?" she asked.

"In the basement. I was just looking for my summer clothes, and I saw a box that I hadn't notice before. It was open, so...."

"It's OK, Elena. I just didn't know that Daddy had kept these, that's all," CD sighed. She didn't know what to tell her daughter, though. Her eyes again scanned the first note. It was on a sheet of paper torn from CD's police notebook. The SFPD letterhead was at the top, and the body beneath it, in CD's handwriting, read:

Dear Nate,
This is the hardest thing I've ever had to do, but I feel that it's best for everyone involved. I can't deal with being a cop anymore. I just can't handle the whole life of it, and that includes you. I'm so sorry, Nate. Don't try to follow me; it won't do any good. And please don't think that I never loved you. I did love you, and always will.

CD wished desperately that she had never written the note. 'How on earth could I do that to him? Act like everything was perfect, and then move out and leave him with nothing but a note? ' she thought.

"Mommy? Are you leaving us? Are you and Daddy getting a divorce?" Elena asked with a tremble in her voice. Her little lip shook, and she fought to keep back tears.

"Oh, no, honey! I will never leave Daddy and your little brothers and you. I love you all more than anything!" CD exclaimed. She then kissed her little girl on the top of her head and stroked her hair.

"Then why did you write this?" Elena insisted.

CD sighed. "Because I was very scared and confused. It was a long time ago, before you were even born. It was just.....it's a long story, sweetie."

"Why were you scared? You've always said that Daddy makes you feel safe."

"He does, Elena, he does. But like I said, it's a long story."

"Tell me, please? I'm old enough, and I won't tell Brennan or Andy!"

CD looked at her for a moment with an unsure look, but then gave a little smile. "Well.....OK." Elena grinned and kept her eyes glued on her mom. CD took a deep breath. "OK, now, you know how Daddy and I were work partners, and that mean woman shot me, and I almost died?"

"Uh-huh."

"Well, that happened just right after Daddy and I decided that we were going to start dating," CD said. Elena's eyes glistened in anticipation. She could hardly imagine her parents before they were a couple. CD continued, "After I recovered and left the hospital, I moved into Daddy's apartment. We were so happy, and we even started talking about getting married. But when we talked about me going back to work, I started getting really scared. I just was afraid of getting hurt again."

"Yeah, there's a lot of bad guys out there!" Elena agreed.

CD smiled. "Yes, there are!.....Then I started thinking about Daddy. I didn't want him to get hurt, either, if something happened to me. So I thought the best thing would be to get out of his life, completely."

"But didn't you love him?"

"Oh, of course I loved him, sweetie. But I thought that it was for his own good, if I left. I thought he would be hurt less if I left him, than if I died. But I was wrong. I hurt him really bad."

"Is that when you wrote this note?" Elena asked.

"Mm hmm. Daddy had taken a leave of absence from work to stay with me while I got better. One day I waited until he went grocery shopping, and then I packed up my stuff, wrote the note, and left. I also left my gun, badge, and star on the kitchen table, and mailed Grandma Kate my resignation letter on the way out of town."

"Oh, that's so sad! Then what happend?"

Then CD continued on with her story......

~ CD's Story ~

Nate let himself into his apartment, carrying 2 bags of groceries. "CD? Sweetie? CD, I'm home! Geez, you wouldn't believe the weather today. The rain is really coming down. You should see---" Nate had set the bags on the kitchen counter, but frowned when he didn't hear CD respond. He looked around, and noticed her gun, badge, and star on a piece of paper on the table. He walked over to it, thinking, 'She must be here. She wouldn't leave the house without her gun!' Nate picked up the slip of paper and read it. He reread it 3 times, not accepting it as truth. Nate felt his heart race, and panic overtook him. He began to shake, and ran to the bedroom and bathroom, shouting CD's name. He felt his whole world crashing down around him, in the blink of an eye.

Nate ran back out of his apartment, not knowing what to do. He raked his hands through his hair and began to hyperventilate. "CD! CD!" he screamed outside. "CD! WHERE ARE YOU? I LOVE YOU! PLEASE COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!" He got into his car and started driving. He didn't know where to go. Nate found himself at CD's old apartment, but she wasn't there. He dialed both Kate's and Jinny's numbers, and asked them if they knew where CD went. Neither of them had heard anything. He frantically began going to all the places that he knew CD liked, like the Anchorside, Alamo Square, her favorite stores and restaurants. He even called he mother to see if she had heard fromher, but Polly hadn't received any word from her daughter.

Nate searched for CD all day. He finally decided to let it go for the day and try again in the morning. He wearily drove himself home, and let himself into his and CD's apartment. He walked back inside, and the emptiness of it seemed to overtake him. For the first time in months, CD's cheery voice and face did not greet him when he came inside. A lump formed in Nate's throat. He tried to swallow it, but it didn't work. He dropped his keys on the table in the entryway and thew his jacket on the sofa. Then he walked into the bedroom and looked at the bed. It was made the way CD did it every morning. Tears sprang to his eyes as he surveyed the room, where they had shared countless devotions of love to each other. There were signs of her everywhere, even though her clothes were gone. The bedding was what CD and Nate had picked out together. Get well cards were still fanned out on her dresser. A picture of her was at its usual spot on Nate's dresser. The tears now began to roll, one by one, down Nate's cheeks. He felt as though his heart had been ripped from his chest and stomped on. Nate took his gun, badge, star, and cell phone off his belt and put them in his sock drawer. He laid down on top of the bed, and gathered CD's pillow into his arms. He could smell her sweet distinctive scent on it, and he yearned for her touch. He squeezed the pillow tightly against his chest, and the sobs started to come. He cried until there were no more tears, and sleep overtook him.

wow, i wanna go bawl my eyes out now......

but then I want to come back and read it again....it was so incredibly powerful; i can definitely picture every word u wrote, it was THAT good.

ohhhhhh Cat great pics!!! Hmmm I wonder if, those were in an art musame and someone placed it as their own without letting you know how much money or prision time they would have to do?

Both Mac and Karen: Congratulations ( they both hug Brian and Kate.) Karen: (looks at Brian).: So I take it your mother doesn’t know? Brain: No. Val: (smiles excitedly). : Ohhhhh, let me tell her!! (everyone starts cracking up). Then Karen’s son and Mac’s stepson Michael and his wife pull up, and get out of the car. Karen: Michael what a surprise. What are you doing here? (Abby walks out side from Karen’s house, and she sees her nephew and. Michael: Aunt Abby. (He waits a beat then says) we’re going to have a baby! (Karen and Mac just stand there stunned for a minute. Abby: (Hugs Michael) Congratulations. A baby. (She starts walking past Karen.) Karen: (Still in shock) A baby? Abby: (does a double take). And... Karen....that means your going to be a...(starts laughing but trying to stop herself...but she just keeps laughing. Kate: Abby I don’t think you want to be laughing right now. Abby: (still trying to keep herself from laughing, but can’t help herself from laughing). : I can’t help it....(laughs) It’s just kind of struck me funny. (still laughing). Karen: Brian, why don’t you share your wonder full news with your mother. Brian: (trying to keep a striate face as well Gary, and Val give each other a high five. And everyone is laughing at this point. Brian clears his throat ) Ahemmm... ( the camera goes back to Karen and Abby. Abby realizes what’s going on now, and isn’t happy at all while Karen and everyone else is cracking up! Gary: (Camera shot back really quick to Gary, Val, Brain, and Kate. Jokingly Gary says) Grandma!(camera goes back to Karen and Abby, and once again everyone is laughing, and the picture freeze on the two of them and end of show).
