Wasn't it ODD that Fred never told Lamont what to do but CRAZY Grady comes in and

gives ORDERS like lamont was a child-LOL Fred never told lamont you can't do this and you can do that. If was Lamont telling Fred what he wanted done and when it wanted done. So if Lamont was so BOSSY with his own dad, how come he couldn't be that way with Goofy Grady?

I always wonder that myself when I watched episodes that had Grady replacing Fred for a while; I thought it was completely ludicrous of having someone like Grady was very passive and not too bright to boss around Lamont and treat him like he was an inferior in a way...

Exactly, Grady was Passive before Fred left and went straight from Passive to Dominant

Too Dominant! It did not make sense..I was surprised that Lamont allowe Grady to treat him in such a matter...I was surprised that Lamont didnt punch Grady in the nose

I know and the ratings came back I just thought that Grady's behavior while Fred was a while was just odd..how all of a sudden he thinks that he is in charge of everything, including bossing around Lamont who was in his early 30's...and how Lamont tolerated Grady's behavior when he did just the opposite with Fred....

I remember a FUNNY line from Rollo when Grady wouldn't let Lamont have Company. Lamont was saying-"this is it, Grady can't get away with this stuff" And then Rollo said-"What are you going to do? Posion your Babysitter?-LOL

Lamont should had Rollo kick Grady's ass..Now that would been funny... without having Fred during the last few episodes of the 3rd season and then again the beginning episodes of 4th; I believe the writers of Sanford and Son should had focused on the Rollo character; he was hilarious and usually sold scenes from the other actors especially weak ones like Whitman Mayo and Demond Wilson....

I think in a sense that this was done for a point.
(Besides the fact some of these episodes may have been written with Fred in mind).

The contrast in Grady from being passive to being active and feeling responsible took everyone by surprise- including Lamont and Rollo- so that the show had some life in the inbetween period.

Basically a "what's up with Grady?" type feel.
This was probably done to sustain interest- knowing it was going to be a brief interlude.

Developing Rollo and such would have deterred from the main intent of getting Red Foxx back and in place again.

I know that was the plan to have Grady replace Fred in a way, even in personality, which to me was a total contrast from his original personality.

And just having Grady act like Grady might have viewers lulled to sleep or not watching because of no Fred.
And there was really no way to develop a complete new direction without knowing what was going on with Red.

By having Grady act like a nut it kept them interested as to where this show was going.

Why do you feel developing Rollo would have deterred from the main intent of getting red foxx back?

well I believe that it did not work that the ratings of Sanford and Son did drop after the contract dispute with Redd Foxx and not having Redd Foxx on the show...and having Grady transfer into a personality that was similar to Redd Foxx seemed to me, weak and superfical, even if the writers and others responsible for the show were trying to make him like Fred....

Actually Sanford and Son finished the 3rd season RANKED number 3 so that was pretty good to say that there was no redd foxx in the last 6 eps of the 73-74 season.

And that is probably the reason why the show sanked from number 2 to 3..I personally couldnt stand Grady on
the Once a Thief Episode; I think he went way over board on controlling who Lamont was allowed to stay at his own house....
