Default Cosby Show

Do you think Cosby Show is gettin over played? I do. It plays on 3 channels here in Tennessee: Nick @ Nite, WGN, and TVLand. I like the show, but it's gettin old.

I think it's a decent show..nothing particularly great. My biggest qualm is that it get 20+ airings a day, while other shows from the same era get zero (Perfect Strangers, ALF, The Facts of Life [Well, 84-89 anyway] the list goes on)

I wont get mad at you.... if this is what the post is about.

But when posts that have NOTHING to do with TCS suddenly pops up with cosby-bashing.
its gets JUST as annoying as the show airing all the time.

I like TCS a lot.... but I DEFINATELY think it airs WAY too much.

Before I discovered Family Ties (the best family show of the 80s) and The Cosby Show was only on TBS in the afternoons, I thought it was a pretty good show. But now I am generally disgusted because it is on all the time and my show isnt.

The actual show isn't that great though. Bill Cosby has to carry it with his goofy looks and comedy. Family Ties is just funnier with better, more solid storylines and actors. The Cosby Show could make the stupidest storylines into an entire boring show.

Yes it's over played. In my area it comes on 5 different networks every day.

I agree. It doesn't bother me that people dislike TCS, but it seems like they have a vendetta against the series. Okay, it is definately overplayed in 2004... doesn't mean it wasn't a great show in 1986.

I think it's getting overplayed. I only saw like one or two episodes and I thought it was ok but not enough for a gazillion airings. Since I don't watch TBS, WGN, Nick at Nite, or TV Land anymore I don't really care. I don't see any point in complaining about it airing too much now. It annoys me that it is very overplayed but Nick at Nite stopped listening to its fans a long time ago. Hey, maybe sometime they will cut down on the airings, you never know. But as long as it gets good ratings (and I happen to believe the only reason it gets good ratings is because there isn't too much else to watch on N@N) it will stay that way. I'm not too happy but it doesn't affect me too much since I don't watch those cable channels anymore.

Very true. It was a HUGE ratings hit in the 1980s. It placed #1 for several seasons and had consistently high ratings during its run in the 80s. In the 90s is died down.

Thats a very good sign.
People noticed the dip in quality and turned away.
IMO, TCS should have ended in 1989.... on a high note.

I always wondered.... why doesn't N@N change their schedule for a short amount of time (maybe 2 or 3 weeks) and see how different shows fare at different times.
Maybe the 12:00-1:00 hour is just a GREAT time to watch classic tv.... whatever it may be.
Maybe ALL their shows will do just as good at that time (but please.... not Full House, it would make NO sense to air after 10pm, let alone after 9)

I like the early seasons, and I agree that it's definitely overplayed.

several things led to Cosby's demise IMO.

1. Roseanne. When Roseanne premiered in 1988, it was the first sitcom that really took Cosby's place. Sure Cosby was wholesome and cute, but the majority of Americans felt more an identity with the Conners than the Huxtables. The Conners were realistic and presented with flaws. Cliff and especially Clair were both "perfect" and never wrong.

2. the addition of Raven. She was cute the first season she appeared, mostly because she was the "cute" stepdaughter of Denise, but the show became more and more like Full House as she became a more integral part of the series.

3. the second exit of Denise. Lisa Bonet's return in season 6 was the jolt of caffeine the series needed after a not-so-great season 4 and 5, but as she was written out midway into season 7, the show got worse. She was the most popular Huxtable kid, but Cosby fired her because she's the only one who saw him as an employer, NOT a father figure.

4. Cousin Pam. The shows attempt to bring the show into the 90's was awful. I did like her friend tho. However, the actual characters we cared about were pushed aside and Pam and Olivia wound up getting most of the storylines in seasons 7 and 8.

5. the kids got older. As happens with all shows, all the kids except Rudy wound up moving out by the end of the series. So the Huxtables kept bringing in other people to stay with the family to make up for the fact. Having Olivia and Cousin Pam live there didn't recreate the way the first 2 seasons were.

6. Elvin wound up appearing on the show more than Sondra did.

(sorry, just wrote a report for English, so I'm in essay mood, lol)
