Something that troubles me...

I was watching an episode of Maury about outrageous footage
caught on video. There was this one clip where a man dressed
as a woman was stuffing cigarette cartons into his pantyhose
and the owner of the convenience store responded by holding
the man at gunpoint. When the man threw a carton of cigarettes
at the owner, the owner fired five shots at the man. Fortunately,
none of the shots were fatal.

This troubles me, however. It did not appear that the man had
a weapon in his possession. If it had been me, I would not have
even approached the man with a gun for fear that I might be
facing criminal charges for attempted murder. That is why I feel
uneasy about convenience store owners having guns, because
the temptation is there to try to act like a hero. It is not worth
it getting killed over store merchandise or money or to risk the
lives of other people in the store. And I am against private citizens
(or police officers for that matter) taking the law into their own
hands, becoming vigilantes basically. I believe in this country.

Yeah, he didn't deserve to got shot at 5 (!) times for shoplifting.

What was that clerk thinking?

That does sound troubling. I think the guy at the store should have at least just called the police and let them handle it from there. And, if the man who shoplifted didn't have a weapon in his possession, then there's no threat that the person behind the counter has to be afraid of. Just call the police and tell them the description of the guy and leave it upto them to catch him.
