Scenes That YOU Thought Were Stupid (or at least didn't work) - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Guys,

Don't get me wrong!!! I am a loyal friend a true of The Brady Bunch! However, there are some scenes in some episodes that just do not work because they are too slapstick.

Here are some scenes and lines that don't pass the Robert Reed litmus test for belivability:

1. The Tiger-Fluffy chase sequence in THE HONEYMOON.

2. Robert Reed crawling on the floor and ribbiting like a frog in "EENIE MEENIE, MOMMY DADDY.

3. The whole episode of "AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSER" It is too bad because it could have been funny as Reed suggested, but Skip Farnum is neither belivable or funny. I also agree with him about the cheesy "one-names for all the soap titles" Carol's a little too happy with lines like, "Well, we used to use "Clear and Bright" until we found out it turned our water dim and dark!" Also, with money budgets being tight, no parents in a family of nine would purposly allow their kids to dirty their own clothes just to test a laundry soap.

4. ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE with Peter and Bobby spilling mud on Mike's tuxedo is overdone

5. MAIL ORDER HERO has Carol's dumb line, "Well we don't even know Joe Namith, do we Mike?"

6. KATCHOO! They sure figure out that Jan's allergic to Tiger's new flee powder quickley don't they? Pet dander would exist in the house for a LONG time even if a pet had to be given away due to an allergy. The conclusion seems rushed.

7. THE UN-UNDERGROUND MOVIE has Greg's line, "All the girls want to be Priscilla and all the boys want to be Indians!" LOL! He should have said, Peter and Bobby both want to be Indians. The word "all" is understood to be AT LEAST THREE PEOPLE!

8. IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? Watch as Carol enters Jan's room after Dr. Cameron is in the house. It's obvious that she sees him, almost pushing him out of the way! Jan says, "Mother...there's a strange man in my room!" Her line to Dr. Cameron, "Well I better talk to Dr. Peter....Porter, she's in the room with Porter....Peter" looks for a laugh but doesn't work.

9. 54-40 AND FIGHT: I don't think they would have a big radio announcement to announce that some trading stamp company was going out of business. The house of cards game is corny but funny! Alice suggests as a fair competition for the kids, "How about that game with the cards building houses?" Mike goes, "That's perfect! Why didn't I think of that!" (Most would just flip a coin or something as Mike even suggests!)

10. THE IMPRACTICAL JOKER: Mike coaxing Myron to run the maze in the garage with Greg and even blowing near Myron to try to get him to go in the right direction! (Robert Reed HATED this episode!)

Cindy dressed up like Shirley Temple. It would have worked when she was 7, but not when she was 11.

I think she was really 14 when she did that episode!

Susan Olsen may have been 14, but Cindy was only 11. Bobby was 12 during the last season, according to the Joe Namath episode, and Cindy was a year younger than Bobby.

Actually, Susan Olsen was twelve, having been born August 14, 1961. (The episode aired in the early part of 1974.)

11. The pie fight at the end of Episode #112, "Welcome Aboard"? That was VERY ATYPICAL of the show as I knew it. Forget "Kelly's Kids"! I don't blame Robert Reed for refusing to take part. (That episode, of course, introduced the "Brady Nation" to Cousin Oliver.

In "Eenie, Meenie, Mommy, Daddy", wouldn't every kid in Cindy's class wanted more than one ticket??? Why didn't they just have two performances for the entire school instead of giving a special performance just for the Bradys??? That's what most schools do any way.

Here are a couple more:

In the episode where Mike and Carol switch places for the day, the family is eating dinner and engaging in small talk around the table. You can hear Carol say something to Greg about Buck Rogers. This seems out of character because neither one of them seems like a big science fiction fan.

In the episode where Jan received the locket, the scene before the closing credits shows Jan, Mike and Carol in the den. Jan says that they received a totem pole from Alaska. Who would send the Bradys a totem pole and what would they do with it??? However, Jan is cute when she flubs her line, "I'm the middle girl on the tele...totem pole."

Well,they knew it was eccentric Aunt Jenny!But yes,I liked when she flubbed that line...I wish more shows would show those mistakes!

It was Aunt Martha who sent them the totem pole. Aunt Jenny sent Jan her leg cast (gross) that was signed by all of Jenny's famous friends (Jean-Claude Kiley! Paul Newman!).

Speaking of Aunt Jenny, her constant name-dropping was a real drag and a major sign of insecurity. Why Jan would want to be like her, I'll never know.

Alice: "The flowers arrived...with a marriage proposal!"

Jenny: "It must be that goofy Lester again."

Carol: "Who's Lester?"

Jenny, with forced nonchalance: "Oh, a United States senator."

And this kind of crap went on ALL through the episode. "Madame Kruschev gave me her recipe for borscht". "I was playing at a club one night, and the king came in." "I'm supposed to be at a dinner at the French ambassador's house."

Ugh.
