Are there any free MP3/Wav converters? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I have some files on my computer that are WAV files that I want converted to MP3s. Do any of you know of any free converters?

MusicMatch Jukebox, RealOne Player, Windows Media Player and Quicktime Player all came installed on my computer so I don't know if they are free. Chances are you probably have one or all of them. I just found out yesterday that the first two had converters while I was playing around with them. I think you have to be online to use the converter on the RealOne Player. I don't know if Windows Media Player and Quicktime Player have converters but I thought I would list them anyway.

CDex is great, Brian. It rips CDs and converts wavs to MP3 (and vice versa). Best of all, it's spyware-free.

i use CDex too, but you can use Windows Media Player 8 or 9 , with a slight modification....
(backup the registry first, and dont mess with this if you dont know what you are doing)

- go to the RUN command on the start menu, type in regedit hit enter

- create a new registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\MP3Encoding
and add DWORD keys for:
* DWORD value: LowRate
* DWORD value: MediumRate
* DWORD value: MediumHighRate
* DWORD value: HighRate

- set the values for whatever bitrate up to 320 you want, in hex
2ee00 = 64k
1f400 = 128k
2ee00 = 192k
3e800 = 256k
4e200 = 320k

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.
