Today, I was watching the episode "That's My Boy?!" with the commentary. I really enjoyed hearing what Dick Van Dyke and Carl Reiner had to say about the episode, but there were two things they did that really stood out for me. One, Carl made a comment about smoking on TV. Then he said, "Having a smoking section in a restaurant is akin to having a peeing section in a public pool." I cracked up! It is so true! Then, at the very end, during the credits, Dick Van Dyke sang the lyrics to the theme song over the music. It was great and now we have those lyrics for our own posterity. I love these commentaries. It is so fun to hear from the principals about what happened and to learn the history of this show.

In one commentary (I think it's for "Where'd I Come From?") Carl and Dick talk about how they purposely reused articles of clothing to make the characters more familiar to viewers, because in real life we get used to seeing people in the same outfits repeatedly. That idea seems brilliant to me in it's simplicity.

I love how Carl points out in the "That's My Boy" commentary about the "trivia" blunder that had Rob and Laura living in the house on Bonnie Meadow when they brought Ritchie home from the hospital, where they had been living in an apt when Rob took Laura to the hospital. I guess Rob could have moved things by himself in a hurry in the day or two that Laura was in the hospital (and Jerry and Millie could've moved at the exact same time!), but that would've been highly unlikely. Carl said that he'd never noticed the blunder before watching these eps recently, since he and Dick did commentary on both of them for the DVD set.
