From watching the Good Times DVDs (I have the first and second seasons), it seems as thought Michael was always put down. I know he's supposed to be this militant, but there were some times where he did make sense. Even though Michael does tell it like it is, everyone was always telling him to "Shut Up" or "I'll Whip your behind", especially James and Florida. If he has his own opinion about something, one stare from his parents or anyone from his family and he quickly recants his decision. I feel that Michael was being continuously stifled by his own family. He wasn;'t really appreciated, and that would cause a child to have problems. Anyone would be glad to have a child like Michael, he was smart and aware of the world, he was wise in his own way, well, except for the episode where he got suspended for calling George Washington a racist. But anyway, James and Florida should have encouraged him more, I mean, he could have saved their lives.

I'll agree with you on that. I do believe James and Florida did value Michael's opinions but were too afraid of the consequences it would bring because of his boldness. You know it's kind of like how African Americans were in the south. They knew that if they looked at a white person the wrong way they could get lynched. A child wouldn't really understand how dangerous that would be so the parents would have to quiet them down so they wouldn't cause the family problems.
Michael was very Militant and I think his parents agreed but they were just being careful.

I agree with you. I think both James and Florida supported Michael in his efforts to be a person who can stand up for what is right and wrong, but they also wanted him to have some respect and to know that he was still a child, and even though he had a lot of strong thoughts and spoke about them, James and Florida also knew when to put a halt to his over stepping the boundary. |
