was Chris always expected to be Piper and Leo's son (since I remember when he joined, a lot of people thought he was actually a grown Wyatt, then that was dispelled), or was this just good timing to go alongside Holly's pregnancy?

Yes from Season Five Chris was suppose to be Leo and Piper's son but his story wasn't expected to last a whole season.
