Default Found out today that Checking In, the spinoff, debuted after The Jeffersons completed

it's 7th season. The Jeffersons had no more new eps after March of 81 and Checking In started in April of 81 and the show still had no viewers. Jeffersons fans said no way-LOL That's pretty bad.

The Jeffersons ran four more years until 85. The first episode of the 81-82 season had Florence returning with the news that the hotel had "burned down", thus she was returning to be the Jeffersons' maid. (Made sense for the show, but in real life, would a hotel manager want to go back to being a maid!)

Solomon, are you saying the Jeffersons had no more new episodes after March of 81?! You are the quintessential Jeffersons expert, surely you know that the show ran on CBS with new episodes until 1985!

No-LOL i'm not saying that. I was saying that during the 1980-81 TV SEASON, the spinoff Checking In did not premeire until the Jeffersons season was complete. Meaning that it was no more new Jeffersons eps during that season after March of 81. Checking IN started in April of 81

Then you are correct. I think Jeffersons viewers tuned out to Checking In because they wanted Florence to return to the Jeffersons (which she did) the following season. Without the George/Florence conflict, the Jeffersons would have been even weaker in the last few years, just as Archie was not as effective in ABP without Mike.

I really wasn't that amused by Florence

Solomon you're right. I remember Checking In ran after the Jeffersons finished its year 7 episodes. I only watched Checking in maybe once. it wasn't very funny. It aired during on a weeknight.

It aired on Thursday Nights at 8pm and it went up against Bosom Buddies-LOL on ABC, and NBC Magazine with David Brinkley. It's a shame none f the Jeffersons Fans gave the show a chance. Here is my question. If the Jeffersons season was already completed, why didn;t they just give Checking In that Time Slot for the remainder of the 80-81 season? I find that odd. Instead it was just Jeffersons reuns-LOL

The Jeffersons was like in 6th place in the ratings for that year so I guess CBS figured viewers would enjoy both the reruns and the spinoff. I don't really know what CBS' reasoning was. Maybe they thought Checking In wouldn't pull good ratings on Sundays. I remember Bosom Buddies but don't know if it had high ratings. I do remember that ABC had an all comedy line up then: Barney Miller, Mork and Mindy, Taxi and some drama or cop show at 10 and NBC didn't have anything popular on thursdays that time.

According to tvtome.com there are a few epsiodes that aired in year 8 that were actually produced for year 7 (the premiere 2 parter where Lionel and Jenny separate, the one with Louise's diary and maybe one more). I remember that there was some sort of Hollywood strike in 1980 and all the shows started late that year and most had fewer episodes than usual.

Bosom Buddies never was in the Top 30 and still did better in it's 8pm time slot than Checking In.
