What would the show have been like if the characters of Molly, Cindy, Nancy, and Sue Ann were kept in- and Natalie, Tootie, and Blair were taken off? (Also assume that Jo was never introduced.)

The show would be about as bad as some of
their attempted spinoffs, or worse.

personally I think it might have suceeded, if they had better writing than they did in the first season.The writers they brought in for the second season were good! If htey had used those writers with Molly, Cindy, Nancy and sue ann who knows what could've happened!

I don't think you could immediately dismiss it as an utter failure. When you think about it the dynamics would have been very similar.

Sue Ann=Blair=Mean, Stuck-Up Person
Cindy=Jo=Tomboy and Mean, S-U Person's rival
Nancy=Nat=Quiet Boy Crazy Type
Molly=Tootie=Smallish Naive Slightly Annoying Person

Ok, so they aren't exactly the same, but you can at least draw some similarities.

However, I doubt that those girls would have had the chemistry that the other girls (Nancy, Lisa, Mindy and Kim) had together.

Also, I think the cast of Blair, Jo, Nat and Tootie allowed for more diversity not only of races but of backgrounds and upbringings, where as the other girls are more similar to each other, which I think would have lead to boring plots sooner.
