Hola!

This is a B&W episode where Andy and barney were checking out some guy outside of town in the country, and the man's strange behavior. They were wondering what he was up to, and (seems to me) Barney asked out loud if the dude wasn't growing Marijuana in the backyard.

Now, this episode was from about 1961-64, before pot became popular in mainstream America. Was this true? It seems that I read that it was. Fill me in.

I haven't seen the ep in question, #29, "Quiet Sam", in years so I looked up the answer in the FAQs at Mayberry.com and found the answer in Q&A 41.
It appears Andy & Barney were speculating about what the new farmer was planting and Barney suggests "happy weed." The line was cut out of the ep later.

On the one I have recorded, he definitely said "marijuana" !
