I though for sure Aunt Esther was in Season 1....

Yeah Aunt Esther did not appear until the Fall of 1972. That's why I don't like th first season too much because it's just Fred and Lamont for the entire episode.

Because this season is outstanding. Its incredibly funny. Is it a must that Bubba, Esther, Grady, etc. to be on an episode for it to be funny? Believe me, I love all of the supporting characters you mentioned, and others that you didn't, like Skillet and Leroy, but Season 1 doesn't have to take a back seat to any of the other seasons. Coffins For Sale, The Piano Movers, We Were Robbed, all were 1st Season Episodes, and at least to me, were among the best of all episodes.
IMO, the only thing that works against Season 1 is that it has only 14 episodes, whereas Season 2 has something like 24.
And another point to be made is that the final season has most of the supporting actors you mentioned, yet I don't think too many people would consider it better than Season 1.
