Default One Issue I Don't Recall Getting Addressed. .

Was whether marijuana or other recreational drugs should remain illegal or not. There was one very late episode in the series (shortly after the bar opens) in which Archie gets temporarily hooked on someone else's prescription amphetamines . Yet, it's odd that in the Bunker household where virtually every OTHER controversial issue of the 1970's got addressed, they never had Archie and Mike debating anything about non-prescription recreational drugs!

Considering that Archie did recreational drugs and Mike didn't, Archie would have had to have been the one arguing FOR them.

I think maybe that's one issue Archie and Mike could both agree on. I don't see either character smoking weed (maybe VERY early Mike in the episode where he and Gloria first met).

Except that Archie actually did recreational drugs, Mike did not.

But it's surprising that Mike wouldn't have had at least ONE friend or acquaintance get in trouble over it and Mike and Archie taking different sides as to what was just!
P.S. Neither Mike or Archie EVER did recreational drugs on the show.

True, but not everyone would think that was the SAME as doing recreational drugs! As I said, I find it surprising that not ONE friend of Mike's in the 1970's didn't get busted for recreational drug usage and that being the trigger for Archie and Mike debating the pros and cons of legalities (even if Mike didn't actually use them himself)!

It sure looked like Archie was getting a lot of recreation out of it.

Archie was abusing prescription drugs, not recreational drugs (i.e. cocaine, marijuana, hash, etc.) Drop it.

Archie was using prescription drugs for recreational purposes. Therefore, they automatically became recreational drugs. If we're going to be against drug abuse, we should be consistent about it with no double standards for conservatives, be they imaginary like Bunker or real like Limbaugh. Deal with it.

Problem is that the issue of illegal street drugs WASN'T dealt with on this show- and, considering the circumstances of those volatile times, I think it needed to be!

Well, it's against the law to exchange prescription drugs if the distributor doesn't have a license to practice medicine, so it really did deal with the illegal use of drugs. As for why they didn't talk about other drugs that are often used on the street, I'm not sure, but the show's main purpose is to entertain and they really didn't have a responsibility to tackle every current topic unless it fit into a good storyline.

I'm not for or against drug abuse. I don't use or abuse drugs, but if others want to ruin their lives, who am I to stop them? Archie was abusing prescription drugs. They were not recreational.

How very Libertarian of you.

They became recreational drugs when Archie used them in a recreational manner instead of under a doctor's prescription.
