Default Will Patrick and Alex marry?

The question is obvious, and asking it is inevitable. I don't think it's too soon to speculate. It goes without saying that none of us think they're going to be walking down the isle any time soon. No, this wouldn't be till much, much later in the series. What I'm wondering is how we think they might handle it. If and when the time comes. As I see it, there are three ways the series could go:

1. They marry sometime during the series, and turn the focus of the show to what their married life is like.

Honestly, I'm not sure about that one. I think it would be a fun way to take the show eventually, but I would be somewhat wary of it because history seems to show that most series that go that route have caved in shortly afterward.

2. They save the marriage for the series finale.

I'm with Her could go on for a number of years (let's hope). Home Improvement lasted nine. I've observed the duration for generally successful shows seems to be around seven years. Are Patrick and Alex really going to just date that long?

3. They never get married, and just remain life-long partners.

I don't know. This is a show, first and foremost, about romance, and how often do you see that kind of show go anywhere but marriage ultimately? Though probably not till later in the series. A few seasons will undoubtedly pass by before an engagement ring is even considered. That's cool with me; I enjoy the show as it is, and really wouldn't want that kind of shift for a while. Just thought this would be an interesting topic to ponder. Where their relationship is going, and how it's going to get there.

But before we do get there, I'm guessing we can expect a little something in the way of rough water in the lives of Patrick Owen and Alex Young in the years ahead. Sitcoms about romance almost always delve into the serious tones of the relationship. An emotional injury might separate our happy couple for a time, like Paul and Jamie on Mad About You.

Obviously, we can take for granted that they'll be back together before too long. But I can easily imagine the promos, perhaps for a cliffhanger season finale down the road: Alex turns away from Patrick, tears in her eyes, and walks away in slow mo, while the announcer asks in a somber tone if this is the end for them. Fade to black. To be continued.

What--you think they're gonna give us a free ride here? We're really invested in these two. The creators can really play with our emotions now.

What do you want to see happen in the long term? What do you think will happen in the long term?

I go for option number two, because that would be a great way to end the series. But first the show has to get renewed for a second season, and when ABC decides on its schedule for the 2004-05 season, who knows what's going to happen? Hopefully, "I'm With her" will get renewed. In the meantime, let's keep watching!

You hear that sort of thing in a lot of places. That's not my milieu. Rock and roll is good-time music. I love rock. So did my parents.

Default I'll go with #2

I actually see them, if the show goes a couple years, breaking up a few times only to get back together.
