Default Is this possible?

My best friend isn't even thirteen yet and she says that she may have breast cancer. Is that even possible?

It's VERY VERY VERY rare, but it CAN happen. More than 95% of the time, though, it's just a normal lump in the breast from growing and is nothing to worry about.

But like the others, I'd tell her to see a doc.

It's probably nothing. I found a lump in my breast when I was in my early 20's and it turned out to be benign. I had it removed and was released from the hospital that same day.

Wow...I didn't know that was possible. I hope everything turns out okay.

It's possible, but highly unlikely, so don't fear the worst. As stated above, a lump doesn't always equal cancer.

I discovered a lump... somewhere on my body... in 1999 that scared the **** out of me (in the midst of Tom Green cancer mania), but it turned out to be nothing.

I am almost 30 and I am thinking about getting a mammogram even though you don't have to get one until you turn 40 but I would much rather be safe than sorry and let it cost me insurance and money instead of a life!!

You should get a mammogram every 6 months to a year is what my doctor tells me, I wouldn't wait till my 40's. Young women are at risk for breast cancer as much as older women are.

Actually that's not true. The chance of developing breast cancer increases with age. Older women are more likely to get breast cancer than younger women. A teenager getting breast cancer would be extremely rare, though not impossible. But even though breast cancer is less common in younger women, it does tend to be more aggressive.

Your doctor probably has a reason for recommending you get frequent mammograms earlier than normal (maybe you have risk factors?) but it is unnecessary and excessive for all women under 40 to get one every year. Mammograms are actually not as useful or accurate in women younger than 40 because their breast tissue is dense, making cancer much harder to detect by mammogram. The American Cancer Society recommends mammograms starting at age 40. Women under 40 should perform self-exams and see their doctor regularly, as that is more likely to find breast cancer than a mammogram.

(Jeez, I sound like a public service announcement. I'll stop now. )
