Perhaps not, but M*A*S*H was always going to focus on Alan Alda's Hawkeye as the lead character. Having had some success on that show, Stevenson probably wanted to headline his own show. He'd also been in the business a number of years and wanted to take his shot at being the lead in a series.

I do believe he regretted leaving years later. When he left M*A*S*H, it was successful, but it wasn't the mega-hit it would become in later years.

Had Stevenson stayed until the end, he might have been able to parlay that into getting a megabucks deal with a producer/creator for a show of his own that might have been a success.

An actor has considerably more bargainining power when their last show was a mega hit, with a finale that was one of the highest rated shows of all-time.

All just speculation on my part, but anything's possible.
