New Spinoff Debate, Is Archie Bunker's Place a Spinoff or a continuation?

It is a great book but their are some mistakes in it. For example it does state that The Lucy Show ran 12 years. It counts The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy as one series which it clearly is not.

As for ABP I consider it a spin-off mainly because it's syndicated as a different package. Back when the show originally aired though I thought of it as a continuation. I don't remember a lot of hype saying it was a brand new show.

See that's what I never understood, why is it not connected in syndication if it's the same show that carried on after the 1978-79 season. You would think that ABP would start right up in syndication and show Archie being in a different situation

I remember them saying the series was shifting focus to the bar and the name of the show was getting changed but that's about it. Me and my family watched AITF every week and we didn't consider it a different show then. And I always considered TAC and Mayberry R.F.D. as spin-offs. Spin-offs are very tricky sometimes. LOL

Because ABP is a spin-off, it's a whole other show.

I won't. I don't feel like reading this thread right now. Has Norman Lear ever stated what it was? I'll apply the same standard to ABP as I did to GT. Whatever he says, goes, in my book.

Norman Lear called it an extension during a 1981 interview with Bill Moyers, I posted an excerpt from it earlier in the thread.

I haven't found anything in which he has stated that it's not a spin-off but to me, Calling it an extension is just as good as saying that it's not.

I can't say much for Three's a Crowd because it's been years since I've seen it but Mayberry R.F.D. is a continuation. The only thing that changed was that Andy and Helen left and Sam Jones who was introduced on The Andy Griffith Show took over as the new lead. Most of the remaining cast of TAGS stayed on for Mayberry R.F.D.

You're not hounding me at all, If Lear has ever called it a spin-off, I'm unaware of it.

Before I had ever seen the show (All in the Family) and I heard it was coming to TV Land, I was excited to see the episode where Edith died. I was so ticked off when after the ninth season, they went back to the beginning. That's when I learned it was syndicated as two different shows (released on DVD as two different shows, also). But in my mind, it's all the same series, just a change in format. And once I get all of the series on DVD, I'll watch it from the beginning, in order for all thirteen seasons, treating it as one show.
