Zeigler was the one who invited Charlie Mays back to the store that night with the promise of a discount on a TV. He intended to set him up as one of the robbers/killers after he got done murdering Eunice and his in-laws. Same with Edward Williams.

Because he didn't anticipate three things happening that night: Felton Thomas being there, Felton Thomas refusing to enter the store and leaving before he could murder him, and his gun misfiring on Edward Williams that night. Also he isn't very bright because he wrote letters to another inmate offering him money if he confessed to the murders and gave him instructions on the types of questions law enforcement might ask him about the crime scene.

I think that's part of the reason why he specifically denounced Felton Thomas. Unlike Mays and Williams, Thomas had no preexisting relationship with Zeigler. He was just a guy who showed up to help a friend, saw some really weird stuff go down, (correctly) followed his gut, and lived to tell about it. He was the ultimate unanticipated variable. Even at that, I do think Zeigler incorrectly assumed Thomas would either just clam up about the whole thing and/or go under the radar out of fear. He was wrong.

I think if Zeigler had succeeded in murdering Edward Williams that night he was not going to cast him as another robber, but as a victim of the "robbers" Charlie Mays and Felton Thomas. That way, Zeigler can claim he was there and saw Mays kill Williams before Zeigler killed Mays in self defense while the other "robber" shot him and got away.

More time has passed and I’m now fully convinced of Tommy’s guilt. I’m honestly a bit surprised as to how many supporters he has.

Then again, there are a ton of people who still think Darlie Routier is innocent as well, despite every piece of evidence proving her guilt.
