Fred from Sanford and Son was drunk in the episode where he comes home from St. Louis; it was sooo funny. Lamont also got drunk in one episode, but I can't remember which.

Bubba on Sanford and Son in the episode "The Big Party" where Fred and Lamont charge admission to raise money to pay the bills. He came over there drunk, and in the morning he fell down the stairs looking for that Playgirl Bunny.

I got you all beat...
When it comes to drunk characters, nothing beats "M*A*S*H." Every character on that show was drunk numerous times. Even my avatar is drunk! Arguably some of the best examples of drunk acting ever. McLean Stevenson and Harry Morgan were hysterical when their characters were stewed.

Foster Brooks, who portrayed a drunk better than anyone else in show business (IMHO) played the role of "Mr. Sternhagen", who ran the TV station that Mindy McConnell worked at in a couple of the later episodes of Mork and Mindy. Naturally, when the going got tough, Mr. Sterhagen got drunk.
Brooks was so good at portraying a drunk that people often wondered if he really was bombed when he appeared on television (he wasn't), or if it was just an act. He did his best bits on "The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts". |

Speaking of Dean Martin, I've often read that his inebriated condition was an act, but I never quite believed that. I think Dean liked his brew...not that there's anything wrong with that.

Jackie Gleason played a very funny drunk--I think the character's name was Reginald Van Gleason III on The Jackie Gleason Show.

Fran Fine got really drunk and mistakingly ended up in bed with Maxwell Sheffield. At the time he was ill with a cold and when Niles the Butler found out about it, he told C.C. Babcock that he'd taken a "wonderful Jewish remedy" that night.
![]() On another episode of The Nanny, Mr. Sheffield was drunk. He was seriously hung-over and was dreading it when Fran came into the kitchen when she always says "Good Morning, everyone!" since he knew that nasaly voice wasn't going to be good for his headache. ![]() One of the best episodes of Three's Company when Jack was when Jack was intoxicated from taking some very potent relaxation medicine. He was at a party with Janet and made a complete fool of himself. He really wasn't drunk but he sure as heck acted like it! ![]() There's Homer Simpson but he's been drunk so many times, I don't know if it's worth mentioning here!

Everytime he would take a drink, Reggie's reaction to the booze would be accompanied by a sound effect, like the pounding of a kettle drum. Always cracked me up. Ernie Kovacks did a similar bit when one of his characters, Percy Dovetonsils took a drink.

Tom Hanks made a guest appearance on Family Ties as Elyse's brother strung out on booze. It was a serious episode...very good.

In an episode of "NewsRadio" Bill McNeal got drunk at work. It wasn't his idea to drink in the office, but Catherine (the co-anchor) tricked him into it. He then did a commercial on the air, again after being tricked by Catherine. Gaziza.
Jimmy James of the same show got drunk probably a couple times, but I remember one episode where he's at a restaurant with Dave and professes his love (in a heterosexual way) for Dave to the people eating. Including Ted Turner. |
