My parents never made me eat something I didn't want to eat, probably because they know THEY wouldn't like someone forcing them to eat something they didn't want to eat. I don't think its necessary to push your kids to eat certain foods, unless, for example, they only ate junk and were getting sick from it.
BTW, I've never tried brussel sprouts, and I'm none the worse for wear.

I think brussels sprouts are pretty good. Even when I was little I never made a fuss if my mom made them. Especially if they were mixed with cheese sauce. They way I look at it if you want your kids to eat the proper foods, don't let them eat junk food in the first place then they won't have any choice but to eat the healthy stuff. Wally and Beaver were forever going to the malt shop, the candy store and eating junk at the movies. I'm suprised Ward and June didn't monitor the boys junk food intake better.

Too bad Beaver didn't have a dog to feed them to under the table.

There is one aspect of this episode which I had almost forgotten about. Who was the only character in the ep who seemed to have anything figured out right?
Not June-- she was too 'drastic' and she should not assume a kid is going to like every food. Not Ward-- he was casual about the issue to the point of copping out ["I think he eats as well as any kid"]. Not Wally-- he thinks Beaver should like anything he likes ["I like 'em; millions of people like 'em-- why don't YOU like 'em?]. Not the waitress-- she thought the deal presented a BIG problem for which the manager should come out. Not the [old] woman at the adjacent table-- she butted in and interfered between a parent and child, which a stranger should not do, at least not on such a minor thing as what vegetable is on the plate. Not the manager-- he only made such a small issue into a bigger scene in a public place. That leaves.... Eddie Haskell. When Beaver was moping about not getting to go to the football game, Eddie just told him, "Look, kid-- I guarantee they'll take you.... They'll let you suffer for a while and then they'll offer some sort of a deal... Just hang around and look sad; they'll come around." Eddie was right this time. And it wasn't a typical bum steer either-- he just told Beaver what was going to happen, and it did. |
