I meant "she" was probably the only kind of girl he was used to. Also, in the PB article it quoted Freddie as saying, "I'd marry a whore in a minute."

I bet she was a hooker type since she was Kathys friend. I think she was the friend Kathy went into business with after quitting hooking.
Didn't realize Freddie was abused as a child. That's so sad. That may have contributed to his problems. I'm betting his parents didn't do it as they both seem like really nice people esp. his mom Maria. I'd sure love to know more about his abuse. Poor dear! ![]() If anyone knows more, I'd sure love to know more! Thanks to this place I have learned more about him & ay'll are helping me to grow closer to him every day. I never knew him but I feel like I do. I know he wasn't like the sweet Chico & that was just good acting but still despite his ropugh background I think he was a very sweet person. From the way his Mama talked about him he sounds like a sweet person who went thru alot... Bless his heart! [This message has been edited by Cheryl Harrell (edited 05-25-2001).] |

The abuse part is certainly a new one on me, and I really don't think that came from his mother. I will agree that he was a rough kid that made it big. Never having been a "young male" I am trying to understand how they think especially when it comes to sex. I once dated a guy who told me men like a whore in bed, but he never said anything about marrying one. It sounds to me the only thing really good that came from that relationship was Freddie Jr. There may have been some other things too. And, you are right, Croter, Freddie Prinze was definetly no Chico. He was just playing a character, and in my opion, a lot of people on this message board get that confused. Freddie never had the opportunity to grow older and mature. Whether male or female, our physical looks and feelings about sex at some point in time do fade or change a little, and he never experienced that. I miss Freddie to this day because we have all been cheated as to his talents and what he could have become. Chico and the Man was just a stepping stone if you will, but poor Freddie lived life like everyday was his last, and I think he also wanted everything last week. As we get older, we get a little more patient too. I hope some of my statements weren't out of line, but I am trying to get to know the real Freddie and not Chico.

Vicki39, I have always felt the same way you do about Freddie. He never had the chance to mature. David Brenner said Freddie was like a kid in a toy store who was told to pick any toy and all the toys he wanted. His meteoric rise to fame never allowed him to experience maturity. What a shame. All of your insights were great. Never feel bad about sharing here! We all have felt the same way. I may be as guilty as the next person to get the character confused with the person, sometimes, but we all have to be reminded of the truth, too. I do think there was a little Chico in Freddie, though. When you act,(or write!) you can't help to project a little of who you are into the part you play and that part can also infulence who you are, too! I'm not sure if I'm making sense here, but I did want to let you know you were not out of line! Far from it!

Thanks Luckmama. I guess I am just so afraid of really talking about how I feel. I would not want to offend anyone on this message board. And, that certainly includes any relatives of the late Freddie Prinze. You never know who could be reading. That's why they call it the world-wide web, and it sure is a small world at times. I was a Freddie fan when he was alive, and I will be forever...

Yeah, I feel he never got the chance to live out his youth as he got thrown into an adults world at a teenage. In his moms book is a picof him in a tux with his first secretary & he looks so adult in it, much older than he really was. I think part of his problem was he wasn't given the chance to enjoy the rest of his youth being famous at such a young age.
I admit sometimes I tend to think of him as being like Chico & have to remind myself that he is differnt than Chico. I gotta agree with you, there must've been some Chico in him. He played it like he really felt & understood the role... |

One thing about Freddie was that he was so gifted and talented. If only someone would've listened to him. I mean really listened to him. He worked too hard and he needed to rest. Someone should've stepped in and told him "No signing anything until you take some rest"! I know if it were me I would've tried to really help him.

According to Maria's book, the girls Freddie dated before he became famous weren't hooker types. He might have come from a rough neighborhood, but I never got the impression that he liked bad types of girls. In the Playgirl article when Freddie mentioned the secretary types never being chosen over the startlets, didn't he mention that it was unfortunate? I thought so, but I might be wrong. I think Freddie was more like Chico than people think. He seemed to take good care of his Mom & Dad, etc. (like Chico looks after Ed. He seemed to be a very sensitive & emotional soul according to Maria's book, as well as a spiritual person. If he was so rough, etc. would he have wanted a family & baby and gotten married? I still think he put on more of a cover when he was interviewed in these articles.

I agree too! Freddie married Kathy and (he didn't really have to) but, he came from good parents and he believed in the institution. Some guys leave their gals if they find out they're pregnant. He didn't he did his duty!

Another thing I remember Freddie being quoted as saying, was that he was not into "one night stands" when he dated women. I can't remember where I read this, I'll have to check Maria's book again. That statement alone is impressive, given his age and profession at the time. But this is also a guy who had thoughts of becoming a minister at one point! Minus his problems with drugs, etc. Freddie sounds like he was too good to be in Hollywood.

I agree with ya Peko. He sounds like a nice guy minute the drugs!
I too read about him not wanting one nite stands & about him wanting to be a minister... From what I read he wanted to be a preacher if the comedy thing didn't work out. He was too nicefor Hollywood...
