Gimme a Break is one of those shows from the '80s that I honestly don't think could translate today. Not just because of the worry that Nell Harper was bordering on a being stereotypical character of black women, but because of the way that Carl Kanisky disciplined his daughters. If you never seen the show, TV Tropes has a good little lay out of some of the Chief's actions when dealing with his misbehaving children.

I think that people didn't really think about it simply because again as TV Tropes laid it out, it was considered "fair for its day". We just assumed that the Chief like James Evans on Good Times, came from the "school of hard knocks". They simply didn't have time (or the patience) to reason with a child. The key difference however is that it was much easier to understand James' anger than Carl's. James couldn't find a good job whereas Carl just seemed like a grumpy and miserable old man, just because. Maybe, the excuse in Carl's case is that he has to be tough since he's a cop and his wife is deceased.

A show from a different time. This wouldn't fly today. Especially if the person being hit is an underage actress.
