I've been watching The Golden Girls lately after a long time of not seeing the show and I'm surprised by how many references are made to people who were popular in the 80s, from Jane Pauley to Michael Landon to OJ Simpson. Just random name dropping that might not be relevant or familiar in any way to people these days.

Well when you think about all TV shows are "dated" in some way. Except if it's a futuristic science fiction show like Star Trek I guess. Because they haven't happened yet LOL.

As long as the themes the show explores are timeless, the show will always have appeal. For instance, yes, the furniture, lingo and cultural references (Nixon, Watergate, energy crisis, etc.) of "All in the Family" are no more, but the topics they explored (racism, equal rights for women, aging, gun control, etc) are still as viable today as they ever were, so the show easily hurdles the "dated" aspect. |
